Difficulty Achievements

Please note: all credit goes to dashi!

Let’s Rock!

Complete the game on Human mode.

Starting mode. Enemies have standard health and deal moderate damage. Recommended for players new to DMC or for a smooth first experience. This is the easiest mode to get a majority of the missable story achievements.

Showtime!

Complete the game on Devil Hunter mode.

Starting mode. Enemies have double health and deal double damage. Recommended for players who are accustomed to DMC style games.

Doing Daddy Proud

Complete the game on Son of Sparda mode.

Unlocked after completing the game once on either Human or Devil Hunter mode. Equivalent to hard mode. Enemies are even more challenging and aggressive, and new enemy types will spawn. Enemy health and damage values double again.

Dance with the Devil

Complete the game on Dante Must Die mode.

Unlocked after completing the game on Son of Sparda mode OR after unlocking the “secret ending” (get the “Well I’ll be Damned” achievement). Equivalent to very hard mode. Enemy health and damage values double again… again!

Stairway to Heaven

Complete the game on Heaven or Hell mode.

Unlocked after completing the game on Dante Must Die mode. Replay the game with a twist: Enemies die in one hit, but so do you. You are afforded a couple of retries. This mode may require some practice but is easily doable as your gun and long-range attacks will one-shot everything.

Highway to Hell

Complete the game on Hell and Hell mode.

Unlocked after completing the game on Dante Must Die mode. Replay the game with a twist: Enemies have a full health bar, but you still die in one hit. Autosave is disabled. You can retry three times, but it’s still pretty challenging. This is typically the most punishing game mode for a reason! The enemy difficulty will be similar to Son or Sparda’s. Like Heaven or Hell mode, you’re allowed 3 retries and for the full 100% you must complete Hell and Hell with full S ranks.

Unmissable Achievements

The following achievements are unmissable story achievements and can be ignored:

  • Fall from Grace – Clear the Prologue Mission.
  • Reunion – Clear Mission 03.
  • End of the Line – Clear Mission 06.
  • Light in the Darkness – Clear Mission 08.
  • This Ain’t Over – Clear Mission 10.
  • The Qliphoth – Clear Mission 12.
  • Gotta Hurry – Clear Mission 14.
  • Back to Life – Clear Mission 17.
  • Man on a Mission – Clear Mission 18.

Missable Story Achievements

Well I’ll Be Damned

Wield overwhelming power to exact an unexpected conclusion.

This is a secret ending achievement obtained by defeating Urizen (the boss) in the Prologue. This can be done the first time you play the game, but I suggest you wait till your Heaven and Hell run, where you’ll automatically one-shot him and get this.

On standard modes, the strategy to beating him normally is straightforward but it takes much longer. The red crystal shield in front of Urizen must be destroyed before he can be damaged directly, and it will be need to destroyed multiple times as it regenerates fairly quickly. Between attacking Urizen and the shield, you’ll also have to dodge wide aoe attacks as well. It’s obviously a lot easier if you’ve upgraded Nero’s skills before attempting the fight.

Protect the People

Defeat all enemies in Mission 01.

During Mission 01, you’ll face enemies as you traverse down a broken highway. Every tentacle counts as an enemy, so make sure you get them all. At some point, a cutscene will play where an enemy will crawl under the broken highway. This is technically the only enemy not within direct view as you’re moving down the map. Just follow it underneath the road and kill it.

Where the Red Orbs Grow

Collected Red Orbs from an unexpected spot in Mission 02.

Early on in Mission 02, there will be a fork in the road ahead, right when you come across a broken yellow ambulance. On the right side, there’s a hole in wall of a building in which you can enter and find hidden red orb trees. Burst them for the achievement!

Backroad

Destroy a certain wall in Mission 04.

There is a rather lengthy tutorial section here as you learn to use V’s summons. After passing through a warehouse into an open street, you’ll be shown how to activate Devil Trigger to boost Shadow and Griffon’s attacks. Rather than immediately try that out, save up 3 bars of Devil Trigger and summon the Nightmare instead. It will destroy a buliding wall and net you the achievement.

Break a Leg

Fend off a menace from above in Mission 05.

In Mission 05, there will be several tentacle enemies hanging from the ceiling above. Kill at least one of these in order to get the achievement. It is technically missable as you’re not required to kill it and can despawn if you take too long to kill it. However, these enemies are in plain view and there are multiple to try fighting if you fail the first time.

Pet Protection

Clear Mission 05 without V’s demons getting stalemated (any difficulty except Heaven or Hell).

Complete the entire mission without having either of V’s demons die. V has two upgrade abilities that make this achievement easier: Shadow Vigor and Griffon Vigor, which both increase the amount of damage they can take before dying. Summoning a Nightmare will also restore their health bars, so you can keep Devil Trigger bars as a “heal” if one is close to death. This is a breeze on Human mode, but can be done in higher difficulties as well.

Share the Pain

Clear Mission 07 with both Nero and V.

This is pretty straightforward. Play the mission once with either Nero or V, then replay it with the other character. It works across different difficulties as well.

Unarmed and Dangerous

Beat Mission 07 without any starting Devil Breakers equipped (any difficulty except Heaven or Hell).

Before starting Mission 07, customize your Devil Breaker set so that you have none equipped. This only applies to starting Devil Breakers, not ones you may find within the mission itself. Those are ok to use!

Eagle-Eyed

Destroy a certain wall in Mission 09.

First, be sure to build up at least 3 bars of Devil Trigger in order to summon a Nightmare. Early on in Mission 09, past the first group of enemies, you’ll be able to head straight down a long rocky path ending in a wall atop a pile of rubble. Behind this wall, you can see a floating gold orb. Activate the Nightmare and it will break the wall for you, granting passage.

Who Needs Weapons Anyway?

Clear Mission 11 without equipping a weapon set for Dante (any difficulty except Heaven or Hell).

This can’t be done within your first (or second) playthrough as you must complete both Son of Sparda and Dante Must Die difficulty in order to even unequip weapon sets. Clearing Son of Sparda gives you the ability to customize Dante’s inventory to remove them and Dante Must Die difficulty gives you the ability to actually fight without pre-equipped weapons through Infinite Devil Trigger (Super Dante costume).

You only need to complete Mission 11 to get this, so once you obtain the necessary items, you can do this on any mode desired.

Don’t Mess with the Best

Use proper timing to get a leg up in a close-quarters battle against the boss in Mission 11.

In order to get this, you’ll need to swing your sword with perfect timing to counter the boss. With the Devil Sword Sparda, you can try spinning your blade in Swordmaster stance so that the clash is more likely to happen.

Each In His Own Way

Clear Mission 13 with Nero, V, and Dante.

Play the mission the first time with any of characters, then return later and replay it with the other two using Mission Select.

Slick Moves

Proceed with caution and avoid unneeded damage in Mission 15.

During Mission 15, you will have to avoid taking damage from any of the traps along the path. There are several different routes you can take towards your destination, all with varying traps. Damage you sustain from actual enemies doesn’t count towards this achievement, but if you’re fighting one and take damage from a trap, it does. Most enemies are actually skippable, so you can ignore them and run past if you’re having issues with the achievement.

Obedience Training

Go on the offensive without relying on brute force in the Mission 16 boss battle.

This one is a bit tricky and I don’t think anyone’s confirmed what exactly unlocks it just yet. Some people have been able to unlock this by using Sin Devil Trigger, or by not using Devil Trigger at all, and others have suggested that knocking off each one of the boss’ heads will unlock this.

Battle for the Ages

Clear Missions 19 and 20 without using continues (any difficulty except Heaven or Hell).

Complete both Missions 19 and 20 without using a continue. It’s best to just take care and not die, but if you do, just restart the Mission from the beginning. Like the majority of these achievements, this is much easier to do on Human difficulty.

A New Job

Accept a new job from Morrison after the Red Grave incident.

Do NOT skip the ending credits or this can end up being missable. You must outperform Vergil near the end of the game and special ending will appear.

Combat Achievements

These are generic combat-based achievements that can be unlocked at any time and/or over time. Progressing towards all difficulties and all S rank will naturally get you a majority of these.

Not Too Shabby

Perform a Stylish Rank S combo.

Steppin’ up the Style

Perform a Stylish Rank SS combo.

Seriously Stylish Slaying!

Perform a Stylish Rank SSS combo.

By far, the easiest character to get S+ combat style rankings with is V. On Human and Devil Hunter, it’s relatively simple to get to at least a S+ rank just by using his basic attacks and nothing else. So long as you don’t take damage and perform finishers consistently, you will build up to S+ in no time.

If you’re having troyble with this, an easy way to avoid damage altogether on V is to ride on the back of a summoned Nightmare after obtaining the Promotion ability, followed up by Trigger Heart.

For Nero and Dante, you may have some difficulty performing a high style combo on the easier modes as the enemies are too few and die very quickly before you’re able to rack up the style points, so this will be much easier to do on bosses and on harder difficulties where you can perform longer combos.

The Quick and the Dead

Defeat 5 enemies in 1 second.

This is easiest to do with Nero’s Devil Breakers and/or on Heaven and Hell difficulty, where enemies die after taking one hit and he has access to the Super Nero costume. For example, wait until a group of at least 5 enemies spawn and get close, then use the Helter Skelter Breaker to kill all of them simultaneously. In Heaven/Hell, you can conveniently wipe a large group of enemies by using a Breaker AOE attack or Super Nero’s AOE abilities.

Demon Destroyer

Defeat 1,000 enemies total.

You will automatically unlock this by playing the game at least 2-3 times. Many enemies in DMC5 are skippable, so killing all of them will build this count much faster.

Jackpot!

Collect more than 1,000,000 Red Orbs total.

You will automatically unlock this by playing the game at least 2-3 times. There’s another achievement in which you have to buy all abilities and the most expensive skill is 3,000,000, so this will come along the way if you’re vying for the 100%.

Dante The Gambler

Use more than 500,000 Red Orbs total with Dr. Faust.

Highly recommended to back up a save before attempting this as it’s essentially throwing 500,000 orbs to the wind. After unlocking the Dr. Faust weapon in Mission 13, build up at least 500,000 red orbs and shoot off till it unlocks.

I Believe I Can Fly

Rack up a total of 60 minutes in the air by jumping or other means.

If you spend a lot of time jumping and fighting mid-air, this should unlock naturally within 1-2 playthroughs. It includes time spent outside of combat. Abilities like Air Hike and aerial attacks can boost the amount of time spent airborne.

Physical Perfection

Upgrade your vitality gauge to max.

The Devil’s Own

Upgrade your Devil Trigger Gauge to max.

Rearm and Repeat

Collect more than 100 Devil Breakers during missions.

As Nero, Devil Breakers can be found throughout Missions as sparkling white objects on the ground. The best place to get this is during Mission 15, where there are 7 Punch Line Breakers all in a single area. After collecting them, you can restart the checkpoint and continually pick them up until the achievement unlocks.

I imagine though that this will happen fairly easily within a couple playthroughs if you’re up.for getting it the normal way. Just be sure to have space to equip found Breakers or destroy yours to make space.

Demon Breeder

Acquire all of V’s skills.

Nothing’s Impossible

Acquire all of Nero’s skills.

Be the Legend

Acquire all of Dante’s skills.

Getting all skills for all 3 characters may be mutually exclusive depending on how many red orbs you have. Each character has several skills, followed by a 300,000 red orb taunt move. It may be best to back up a save file, purchase all the skills for one character once you’ve accumulated enough red orbs, then reload and do it again for another character.

Some skills can only be accessed after completing higher difficulties. A full list of all abilities coming soon.

Perfect S Rank

Hell of a Hunter

Clear all missions with S rank.

Clear every mission with a S rank. For the most part, this means performing well in fights and collecting as many red orbs as possible, whether by killing enemies or finding them in the environment.

There are a total of different 21 Missions, including the Prologue, that have to be S-rank in order to get this achievement. They can be done in any order, across any difficulty (not just one difficulty alone). So if you get a S rank on Human mode, then another in Devil Hunter, both will count towards your total. For the prologue, you must perform well against Urizen in order to get S Rank. According to some people, it is not necessary to defeat him if your combat rank was good, but you should at least attempt to actually kill him for a chance at a higher score.

Because this applies across any mode, it is easiest to get in Heaven/Hell, as you will take 0 damage when you one-shot enemies.

Worthy of Legend

Clear all missions with S rank on all difficulties except Heaven or Hell.

Clear all 21 Missions (including the Prologue) across Human, Devil Hunter, Dante Must Die, Son of Sparda and Hell/Hell difficulty modes with a S Rank. This makes a grand total of 105 Missions that have to be S-Ranked. As previously mentioned, you should attempt to defeat Urizen for an S Rank in the Prologue.

In addition, Infinite Devil Trigger and the special Super costumes will lock you out of a S Rank, so extra difficult modes like Hell/Hell have to be completed without them.

For this and the previous achievement, it’s important to know how Ranks are calculated:

Penalties and Bonuses

  • ActionRank / Modifier
  • Super Costumes:-80% Rank
  • Auto-assist:-20% Rank
  • Revives after dying/ Reduces your score the more you use revive
  • No Checkpoint Restart:+20% Rank
  • No Hit Run:+220% Rank

Therefore getting a no-hit and no-restart run is a guaranteed way to get consistent S Ranks across all modes! There are also several miscellaneous Style bonuses, such as speedrunning and playing co-op, that can boost your overall score.
