Fortnite – How to Fish

The launch of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 1 saw tons of new mechanical additions to the game, including a brand new map and locations. One of the stranger new mechanics allows players to go fishing. In fact, the New World challenges will force players to catch a weapon while fishing. We decided to put together a quick guide that will tell you everything you need to know about how to fish in Fortnite, including Fishing Pole locations and items that can be caught.

Where to Find Fishing Pole Locations

Fishing and video games don’t typically mix, but in typical Epic fashion, Fortnite fishing is rather fun and simple. All you need to begin fishing is a Fishing Pole and a fishing hole. Did you like our rhyme? We can do them anytime!

Unlike other specialty items, you won’t be able to unlock a Fishing Pole in the Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 1 Battle Pass. Instead, you’ll be able to find Fishing Pole locations in excess within each game. They are typically found as floor loot, in chests, and on docks in areas close to the water. You can also find them sitting in barrels on a dock, as seen in the image above.

They will appear just like any other item, and will be glowing white. When you come across one, simply pick it up and rotate over to it in your inventory. You can use them as many times as you’d like, as they will never break.

How to Fish

Learning how to fish in Fortnite is a whole lot easier than fishing in the real world. Once you have your Fishing Pole, all you need to do is cast it into a fishing hole and wait for a bite.

Fishing holes appear as white circles in the water, as you can see in the image above. There are multiple fishing holes in any body of water, so they won’t be hard to come by. However, it is worth noting that you can also cast your line into any body of water and you’ll have the chance to reel in smaller catches.

Once you’ve found the perfect fishing spot and are holding the Pole, you will need to cast it into the white circle if you want the best rewards. You can do this by holding down the shoot button/trigger and lining up the blue line with your desired fishing location. Once you’ve got it lined up, cast your line into the water and wait for a nibble. When you get a bite, you will feel a vibration, which indicates it’s time to reel in your catch. Simply press the shoot button/trigger again to see what you caught. If you wait to long, you’ll have to recast your line and try again.

What can I Catch While Fishing?

Similar to real fishing, you won’t always be catching an aquatic animal when you go fishing in Fortnite. While there is a good chance you will reel in a fish, you might also reel in a gun, a tin can, ammo, or nothing.

If you reel in a fish, you can eat it for a variety of health and shield bonuses. A Flopper (green fish) will offer a 50 point health boost, while a Small Fry (white fish) will offer a 25 point health boost. On the other hand, a Slurpfish (Purple fish) will offer a 50 point shield boost. You can find Floppers and Slurpfish by casting a line into the white fishing holes. While Small Fry’s can be found when casting anywhere in a body of water.

If you reel in a weapon, you’ll be able to use that throughout the match, like any other weapon you’d pick up. Additionally, if you reel in a tin can, it can be thrown at players for minor damage. Now that you know how to fish in Fortnite, cast a line, kick up your feet, and enjoy a nice relaxing trip to the lake. Oh, but make sure you don’t get shot in the back!
