With the launch of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 1, a lot of things are changing in the popular online battle royale game. With the addition of things like fishing and the ability to hide in dumpsters, the game has essentially reinvented itself. One other major change allows players to upgrade their weapons during a match by using an upgrade bench. Our guide will take you step by step through upgrading your weapons in Fortnite as well as share all of the upgrade bench locations that we have found.
How to Upgrade a Weapon in Fortnite
Often times after dying, players will say that if they just had a better weapon, they would have survived. With the addition of Fortnite upgrade benches, that excuse is now invalid. Now, if you have a handful of materials and a base weapon, you can upgrade your weapons from Uncommon to Legendary with the click of a button.
Each weapon upgrade in Fortnite will require four things: wood, brick, steel, and a base weapon. The amount of materials you will need to upgrade your weapon in Fortnite is going to depend on the rarity of your base weapon.
For example, if you want to upgrade an uncommon weapon to a common, you’ll need 50 of each material. From there, you’ll need 100 of each material per rarity level. To keep things from getting confusing, below is a list of the material amounts needed to upgrade a weapon based on its rarity.
- Uncommon to Common: 50 of each material
- Common to Rare: 150 of each material
- Rare to Epic: 250 of each material
- Epic to Legendary: 350 of each material
To use an upgrade bench, approach the bench with the weapon you’d like to upgrade in your hand. As you get close to the bench, you’ll see all of the requirements needed to upgrade that specific weapon. As long as you have the necessary materials, you can easily upgrade your weapon by following the on screen commands.
Fortnite Upgrade Bench Locations
There are a couple of different upgrade bench locations in Fortnite, spread out across the new map. The majority of them are located in named locations, however, some will be in unmarked buildings and locations. You can see seven different Fortnite upgrade bench locations on the map below.

Unfortunately, while upgrade benches can appear in these locations each match, it isn’t guaranteed. This means that you might visit one of the locations on the map, but won’t find an upgrade bench. For that reason, you’ll want to keep our map handy, so you know where the nearest Fortnite upgrade bench location is at all times.
