Introduction

Vampire the Masquerade: Coteries of New York is a short visual novel set in the universe of the Vampire the Masquerade RPG. Since the game is rather short and is mostly about atmosphere, I suggest you first make a clean playthrough without following any guide.

As of this writing, there is no option for text to instantly appear (the fastest text speed is still a bit slow) and no way to skip text. At least not included in the game. My advice to you if you are hunting for achievements and don’t want to get tendinitis is to use an auto-clicker software to automatically click on the “Continue” button and rush through the text that way.

This guide is not meant to be a walkthrough. Only use this guide if you are hunting for specific achievements and do not care about spoilers.

Brujah Achievements

The following achievements can only be obtained if you pick the Brujah (Eric) character.

Rebel Yell

  • Become Embraced into the Brujah clan.

Launch a new game, pick the Brujah character. The achievement will unlock very soon after the intro.

Like A Moth To An Old Flame

  • Meet somebody you used to know in life as the Brujah.

Keep playing with the Brujah character and at some point Qadir will bring you to meet your ex-girlfriend. The achievement will unlock after you’ve met her.

Ventrue Achievements

The following achievements can only be obtained if you pick the Ventrue (Amanda) character.

The Managerial Call

  • Become Embraced into the Ventrue clan.

Launch a new game, pick the Ventrue character. The achievement will unlock very soon after the intro.

Consider This My Resignation Letter

  • Meet somebody you used to know in life as the Ventrue.

Keep playing with the Ventrue character and at some point Qadir will bring you to meet your boss. The achievement will unlock after you’ve met him.

Toreador Achievements

The following achievements can only be obtained if you pick the Toreador (Lamar) character.

Beyond The Canvas

  • Become Embraced into the Toreador clan.

Launch a new game, pick the Toerador character. The achievement will unlock very soon after the intro.

Words That We Couldn’t Say

  • Meet somebody you used to know in life as the Toreador.

Keep playing with the Toreador character and at some point Qadir will bring you to meet your sister. The achievement will unlock after you’ve met him.

Bad Endings

The following two achievements can only be acquired by triggering a bad ending during your trial in Elysium at the beginning of the game. Note that, as of this writing, your save file will be destroyed when you reach an ending, good or bad.

…Damned If You Don’t

  • Accept your fate in Elysium.

After the Prince demands your execution and Qadir is getting himself into a killing mood with some baseball talk, you are presented with three choices. Choose to remain silent for the execution to proceed and to unlock this achievement.

As Far As Your Legs Can Carry You

  • Try running away from Qadir during your trial.

Much like the previous achievement, when Qadir is ready to cut your head with his sword, try to escape to fail miserably and unlock this achievement.

Coterie Quests

The following achievements are related to the 4 companions Sophie tells you to form a Coterie with. Note that you won’t have enough time to unlock them all in one playthrough. I suggest you focus on two companions max by playthrough to leave enough room for other events and sidequests.

First recruitment steps

When you first contact each of your potential Coterie members, if you go through the entire scene without messing things up terribly, you’ll get the following achievements (one per companion):

Good Job, Mods

  • Convince Hope to cooperate with you.

When Hope asks you to be a moderator for her live chat, agree and do your best.

Sweet Smell of Success

  • Convince D’Angelo to cooperate with you.

This one is actually pretty hard to mess up. Try to help D’Angelo with his investigation and don’t be aggressive with Robert when the two of you confront him and you should be fine.

Enchanted To Meet You

  • Convince Agathon to cooperate with you.

Be nice to both Agathon and his Sire and help him on his quest.

A Walk in the Park

  • Convince Tamika to cooperate with you.

Do not insult either Tamika or her brother and you should be fine.

Quests Completion Achievements

Exhaust the events of a given companion without messing things up entirely and you will unlock the corresponding achievement (one per companion):

Extremely Online Gal

  • Complete Hope’s questlline.

Help Hope destroy her rival’s data to unlock this achievement.

Bye, My Lovely

  • Complete D’Angelo’s questline.

I actually have had trouble failing this questline, so I’m not sure what one can do to mess things up after the first event… I haven’t tried the option of selling Robert out, so maybe that’s a bad choice… but, more likely, if you make it through the first event, you’ll end up completing D’Angelo’s quest line. Note: it doesn’t matter if you tell him to remain as D’Angelo or to be himself at the end.

Burn After Reading

  • Complete Agathon’s questline.

Respect Agathon’s silence and privacy and do not rat him out to his Sire. Help him retrieve the research he’s after and let him deal with his ex and you should have little difficulty unlocking this achievement.

Wild at Heart

  • Complete Tamika’s questline.

Be respectful at all times and lend Tamika and her brother a hand whenever the opportunity arises. It’s probably (?) impossible to save her brother’s life, but that won’t prevent you from unlocking the achievement. Just help her kill as many SI hunters as possible.

Grand Finale Achievements

If you’ve completed a companion’s quest line, they will come to your aid in what the achievements’ description call the “grand finale”. Interestingly, that scene is not the finale (and I don’t think it’s all that grand either…) as there are two scenes afterwards (the meeting of Sophie and Torque in the bar and then the ending with… almost every Elder in NYC). You’ll unlock the corresponding achievements automatically (one per companion).

Hope is a Dangerous Thing…

  • Hope came to your help in the grand finale.

Complete Hope’s quest line and this achievement will unlock when she helps saving you from the Second Inquisition.

Trouble Is My Business

  • D’Angelo came to your help in the grand finale.

Complete D’Angelo’s quest line and this achievement will unlock when he helps saving you from the Second Inquisition.

Arcane Support

  • Agathon came to your help in the grand finale.

Complete Agathon’s quest line and this achievement will unlock when he helps saving you from the Second Inquisition.

Beast Mode

  • Tamika came to your help in the grand finale.

Complete Tamika’s quest line and this achievement will unlock when she helps saving you from the Second Inquisition.

Side Quests

Aside the scripted events that automatically occur at set points in time and the quest lines associated with your Coterie companions (the 4 vampires Sophie tells you to recruit), there are 3 optional side quests associated with the following 4 achievements (note: two of those achievements are obtained via the same side quest by behaving differently, so you’ll need two different playthroughs to get both).

Journalistic Intervention

  • Complete Frank Dougherty’s questline (“A Nosy Reporter”).

Deal with the journalist however you want without killing him and when you meet him the third time, you’ll get ambushed by the Second Inquisition and the achievement will unlock after you go back to Sophie’s. Note: it is possible to drink Frank dry the second time you meet him, but I as tried that option after having already unlocked the achievement, I do not know if that option would unlock it as well.

The Faith Of The Furious

  • Complete Benoit Segal’s questline (“Faith and Myth”).

Meet with Benoit multiple times until he brings you with him to meet Father Anthony at his place. Get out of there and go tell Sophie what happened. On my first playthrough, I met the priest at his home but kept the event a secret from Sophie and the achievement did not unlock.

Every Breath You Take

  • Complete Adelaide Davis’ questline (“Somebody’s Watching Me”) as her latest obsession.

When you get the option to try to flush out your stalker or ask Sophie to do something about it, pick the former option, Adelaide will save you from a traffic incident. You’ll then receive the visit of a young man eager for you to drink his blood, accept. You’ll come home at some point and find Adelaide on your couch with a snack (i.e. a drowsy girl). Netflix and chill with her. Sophie will not be pleased and will force you to confront your new girlfriend in Elysium. Be nice to her in public and the achievement will unlock.

Get Out Of Here, Stalker

  • Complete Adelaide Davis’ questline (“Somebody’s Watching Me”) as her bitter foe.

When you get the option to try to flush out your stalker or ask Sophie to do something about it, pick the latter option. Adelaide will stalk you more directly, be as rude as possible to her. Call her a creep/creepy whenever you get the option. Eventually, you’ll find cops in your haven accusing you of assault. Let Sophie handle them and let her handle Adelaide in Elysium. The achievement will unlock after you’ve confronted her.

Recruitment Failures

There are two achievements you can only get by intentionally failing to recruit companions into your Coterie.

A Recruitment Fiasco

  • Fail to recruit somebody into your coterie.

Be super rude to your potential companions the first time you meet them and you’ll fail to recruit them and unlock this achievement. Note: D’Angelo requires more work than that to get rejected, see the achievement below.

A Face Only A Mother Could Love

  • Nobody came to your help in the grand finale. Except for…

Note that this is by far the hardest achievement to unlock in this game. To do so, you have to intentionally fail recruiting each of the 4 potential companions:

  • Hope: refuse to moderate her live chat.
  • D’Angelo: be rude to him, try to be as unhelpful as possible with his investigation, ring Robert’s doorbell when given the option and then proceed to be as rude and aggressive as possible with Robert. It actually is kinda hard to get D’Angelo to dismiss you as a potential partner on that first night.
  • Agathon: refuse to help Agathon on his quest.
  • Tamika: insult her brother, then tell Tamika she should keep a leash on her pet and then tell her he is keeping her down and that should be enough for her to cast you out.

The achievement will unlock when Kaiser and his ghoul come to your rescue with no companion in sight.

Canon Endings

The following two achievements are obtained by avoiding the bad endings and reaching the canon ending of the story a certain number of times.

…Damned If You Do

  • Rage against your fate and complete the game with any character.

Avoid a bad ending by asking the Prince for mercy during your trial (thereby agreeing to Sophie’s conditions) and paying attention to your hunger during the game. Eventually you’ll reach the canon ending and unlock this achievement as the credits roll.

The New York Trilogy

  • Complete the game with all three characters.

To unlock this achievement, you need to reach the canon ending at least once with each of the three characters you can pick: the Brujah, the Ventrue and the Toreador.

  1. Dunno, liked D’Angelo & Aisling Sturbridge, but the limited choice of clans, the lack of proper #grammar, and the load of click-to-read limited choices were not that much fun. But, the sequel is much worse, though it is CTRL to fast-forward text.
