Beneath the Mountain – Basic Beginners Tips

I’ve played the game a while, and there are certain things that I failed to understand when I first played it, and thought that newcomers might appreciate the information.

Tips for New Players

  • You earn Stone from better rock cubes. Gold (3), Silver (2), all others (1).
  • Right click cubes that you want prioritised. They’ll be highlighted in blue.
  • Highest quality cubes will be automatically prioritised by your miners. So if you set to mine a Gold cube, they’ll focus on it. This also applies to #2, so the highest quality cube will be mined of the “blue” highlighted cubes first.
  • Engineers will not build structures if they are too close to an enemy.
  • Miners will not mine cubes, if it is in a cave, that hasn’t been cleared yet.
  • If you do not place a gate down, enemies ignore walls.
  • Railways can be used by Engineers and Miners to quickly get around.
  • Put down traps to help with invasions. I prefer to use a mix of traps, as some traps slow down enemies and others deal heavy damage.
  • One day ingame is 10 seconds. It takes 30 days to acquire 1 Runic Knowledge, without any Runic Libraries.
  • Enemies can use your bridges, so keep that in mind, when placing them.
  • Once you choose a Talent, it cannot be undone. So think carefully before selecting one.
  • If you hit maximum gold treasury storage, Miners will refuse to mine.
  • Many structures have extra research to be done, so click each one once built to see if they have any tech.
  • The size of the lake is immaterial; you just need two adjacent squares to place a Fishery structure. Multiple Fisheries can be placed on the same lake.
  • If a cave hasn’t been cleared yet, it is usually because:
    • An enemy is hiding in the corner.
    • An enemy wandered out and is elsewhere.
    • There is an unhatched spider egg somewhere
    • Rarely it is a bug.
  • Engineers will occasionally wander into your entrance tunnels, to build tiles and walls. If you do not want this to happen, when they have no other work to do, use Hold Ground on them, until you do have work for them to do.
  • Each military unit has its own purpose and role. Each one can be viable for lategame play, depending on how you use them and which talents you choose.
  • Stone storage is increased by building Mining Camps. So if you want the Gold from Stonehewer’s Exchange (Mining Talent) more readily, only have one Mining Camp.
  • Gold storage is increased by building Treasuries. They also serve as a gold drop-off point for Miners.
  • Units will automatically seek out a Tavern to get food, after being out of combat for 15 seconds. You can also click on the structure with the unit selected to force them to eat. You need food generated by other structures though, for the Tavern to provide healing.
