Ignoring Nuke Firing Arc
Nukes have a firing arc limit, but there’s a way to ignore this and still hit the enemy ship.
What’s the firing arc?
Weapons don’t shoot their projectiles if they are aiming outside their firing arc.
You can see the firing arc of the weapons of your ship in direct control mode.
Why can nukes ignore this?
Our ship is able to target and hit the enemy ship, even if it’s outside of the firing arc, if we “convince” the nuke launcher to launch anyway.
How do we replicate this?
- Make sure you have weapons control enabled.
- This is only possible in direct control mode
- Your nuke launcher should be on Fire At Target (you can also use Fire At Will if you want)
- The Direct Control binding should not be A.I. Controlled. I’ll choose Left Click
- You should target the nuke launcher on the enemy ship. You can use the “Target Weapons” button, PIP, double right click or any other way to target your nukes.
- Left click with your mouse anywhere inside the firing arc of the nuke launcher. You don’t need to left click the enemy.
The nuke will launch away from the launcher, pause mid flight, turn towards the target and speed up again
Why is this useful?
With this technique and some practice, you will be able to hit enemy ships with nukes in a few situations that are impossible without it.
This second launch is not technically impossible without this, but in some situations during a front spin ram, it is.
Notice how in almost every situation, I’m spinning very fast and away from the nukes launched. This is necessary for the nukes to avoid my own ship.
I think it’s very useful on “spin rams”, situations where I ram the enemy ship and force a fast rotation. If you want to avoid these shots, I’d suggest you to avoid spin rams. If you can’t exit the ram, try to cancel the fast rotation with the engines of your ship.
If we are not rotating, my nukes will probably hit my own ship, hit your front or just miss.
