Here is a quick little guide to how exactly I build my “nice” looking roof systems.
Roof Building Guide
By Lord Taltosh
Step 1: Determine If your roof is even or odd
Usually this consists of placing down 1m floor tiles. All of your build systems come in 2 varieties: 1M2 and 2M2. Since roof pieces only come in 2m2 for now, we’ll work exclusively with those.. Odd roofs are going to need a flat middle section, so I typically try to keep my roof systems Even.
Step 2: Determine what kind of roof system you want
Most roof systems are going to come in 2 styles, Bi or Omni-directional. This refers to how many directions your roof can slope. When thinking of greek buildings, I tend to imagine Bi directional, sloping away from a center peak.
Step 3: Pick your Starting Point
I like to start with a corner. So a lot of times I go to the front left corner of a building, if you are facing it. I start by placing my roof first. Don’t worry about closing any gaps, we’ll handle that later.
Step 4: Do Everything in Mirror
If you place down a row on one side of a roof, go to the other side and duplicate it. We’re going for a clean, symmetrical roof on any design, so make sure you are duplicating your work as you go, not once you are done with one side.
Step 5: Find your middle
You should reach this step naturally as you build. Typically you do this within 3-4 tiles on any sized roof. Even my largest roof is 5 tiles wide in any direction.
Step 6: Details
This one is a little more personal style than anything. I personally like to use raised roof styles, where my roof ‘base’ and roof ‘start’ are two different heights. I personally prefer to use the Piece called Stone Entablature to make my roof appear to have some distance between my ceiling and the roofline.
Other Notes
For roof corners, always match the direction of the corner of your roof. On interior corners, or corners that cut into your building, you want an inverted corner. For corners that face out, a standard roof corner works well. Always try to keep in mind, water wants to flow down a roof, if you are struggling to determine what piece goes in a place, I have included a nifty chart that shows the directions and types of roofs for each corner you might encounter.
