In the long grass keep your belly to the ground, and fix the ball of mouse-life in your narrowed eyes.

But keep your sharp ears scanning round in search of distant dog.

With a soft silence move each paw in turn, until mouse-smell is musky in your breath.

Then freeze, wind your muscles tight, don’t breathe for now, and set your senses forward in a small bright circle around the mouse.

Pounce low and fast to snare soft mouse-ball in your nest of claws and teeth.

Then you can relax, and uncoil your long muscles in their sack of fur.

Enjoy the moment to shear soft mouse with your slicing hind-teeth.

Savour a crunch of small bones, and warm mouse-juice on your rough tongue.

It’s good to get outside the walls.
