System Shock – Guide to Lowering Shadow Resolution for Performance

Higher shadow resolutions impact GPUs significantly, here’s how to change that. This setting is not the same as the Shadows setting in the in-game Video options.

Lowering Shadow Resolution for Performance

INI File Location for Windows/Steam

You’ll find the INI file located at:

  • %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Nightdive Studios\SystemShock\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\GameUserSettings.ini

The Setting Itself

The setting sits inside the

[ScalabilityGroups]

section.

The line is:

sg.ShadowQuality=3

And you should gain a noticeable increase in FPS by changing it to:

sg.ShadowQuality=2

You will probably notice that the shadows are slightly less sharp and less distinct.

As this is an option, it is completely up to you if you’re willing to give up a small amount of image quality for an increase in frame rate.
