How to Deal with Trollgar
Trollgar is really rough. If you don’t feel like you can beat him on a run, I would advice buying a pale heart on the shop, even if you haven’t lost a fight it. Sometimes, just taking the loss and progressing to act 2 to give your comp the time it needs is the best course of action.
You can also try Stalkers + one big tank, probably prefering the ghoul stalker to have some ranged unit with AOE too.
Since getting rid of vex and Gorbin is sort of essential to winning the fight.
Another thing that worked once for me was:
- Vanguard/Orc/Engineer
By positionning your units correctly, you should be able to get Torque on Vex and the Demon Engineer to cast and jump Gorbin before Trollgar gets his first cast
Essentially, wrapping under him to cut Torque’s access to Trollgar and forcing him onto Vex
And engineer turret will help finish them off, and then it’s not like, easy, since you only have melee units that are begging to get all killed by Trollgar in one cast, but you avoid getting one ranged unit completely ganged up on
Another comp would recommend, but still have to try to really know whether it’s a good strat or not, would be poisonner or reptile. The main thing being to use Monty, as he shouldn’t be affected by Trollgar’s invis/invul which often tricks ranged unit into moving into his range
Other than that, if you have enough potions, that’s also a valid solution. If you really need to beat the fight, you probably want: Stifle for Vex, Health for your tank, Fire for Trollgar, AS or Mana for your carry
Telekinesis potion (I think that’s what it’s called? The one that allows you to move units) can also work if you have 2 of them I think?
Also, I guess low mana cost units would fare better, since they get better retargeting, which is crucial in dealing with Trollgar’s clones
But I will also stand by me original thoughts: for Trollgar and other bosses you find hard, you really should just consider getting a pale heart (whether through quest or shop) and sort of ignoring him
But that’s also something you can’t decide at the last moment, you gotta take it into account early enough because it will impact your devil deal fight. Taking a devil deal in act 1 often leads to a loss, which is fine since you start with 2 pale hearts, but then you are absolutely betting you can get a pale heart in the shop and win the fight before the boss
Oh and finally, be mindful about your SP values on your carry
Since Vex targets highest SP from what I remember, caster carries are harder to make work, and if your carry gets SP items, Vex might target them, which could lead to a not so fun time.
What is means how targeting works?
Some units have specific targeting. Vex, for example, should target your unit with the highest amount of SP. Wolfgang also has some unique targeting. Crosby, the bug duelist and probably a few other units will target the furthest unit from them
You know a boss is tough when the only advice on how to beat him is to survive the loss.
