The Outlast Trials – Ranking Explanatory Guide

What affects the ranking? What you should and shouldn’t do?

Ranking Explained

All credit goes to Ruzzn!

What Doesn’t Affect Your Rank?

  • How much time you are at trial.
  • How many extra posters you’ve collected (more than mission requires).
  • How many times you’ve been detected by enemies.
  • How many times you’ve been jumpscared by “hider” (it will only count damage, if you took it).

What Does Affect Your Ranking?

  • HWT – How many times.
  • HW – How many/much.
  • HWT you did take damage (less = better).
  • HWT you lost your sanity, even only 1/3 (less = better).
  • HWT you triggered sound traps, gas traps, door traps, electric traps, sleeping guys (less = better).
  • HW psychosises did you survive (more = better, but you need to lower your sanity somehow, which will lower you ranking).
  • HW antidotes you used (more = better, but you need to lower your sanity somehow, which will lower you ranking).
  • HW heal bottles you used (more = better, but you need to lower your health somehow, which will lower you ranking).
  • HWT you used your rig (more = better).
  • HWT you used batteries (more = better).
  • HWT you used rig recharger (more = better).
  • HWT you used bricks/bottles to distract enemies (more = better).
  • HWT you hit enemies with bricks/bottles (more = better).
  • HWT you headshoted enemies with bricks/bottles (more = better).
  • HWT you helped someone with cooperative action (more = better).
  • HWT did you hide (more = better).
  • HWT you revived your friends (more = better).
  • HWT you helped your knocked friends (more = better).
  • HWT you saved your friends from attacks/traps (more = better).
  • HW blocked doors/barricades did you bash (more = better).
  • HWT did you use adrenaline shot (more = better).
  • HW documents did you collect (more = better).
  • HWT you saved your friends from execution (more = better).
  • HW syringes you used (more = better).
  • HW locked containers you’ve opened with lockpicks (more = better).
  • HW locked containers you’ve opened with master key (more = better).
  • HW traps you disarmed (more = better).

Any action that is not red in final ranking screen does affect your ranking, and affects it with more=better rule.

Advices [Solo]

Use every battery you see. If can’t use it – just toggle night vision for a moment.

Use every bottle and brick you see (damage enemies, headshot’em when possible), keep 1 or 2 bricks/bottles for the end of the trial and use it to get to the shuttle safely.

Always keep 1 (better 2, if you have upgraded your inventory up to 4 slots) bricks or bottles. If you have upgraded a perk, that allows you to use brick/bottle to skip Hider jumpscare – you can avoid being damaged.

Use every adrenaline shot you found, cuz they’re pretty much useless – there are no places in any map where you can’t just jump into the dark and sneak or silent-jump away from the enemy.

Use rig every time it recharges, if you found rig recharger – use the rig and recharge it.

Bash blocked doors/barricades.

Avoid any traps, damage, sanity loss.

Disarm traps!

Advices [Co-op]

Defuse door traps and use batteries from it.

Use any batteries that you sure won’t be need/used by your teammates, for example, batteries that are far from everyone.

You can do a “stash” with batteries in somewhere, your teammates will take it if they need, and you could use all the batteries from this “stash” closer to the end of the trial.

Use every bottle and brick you see (damage enemies, headshot’em when possible), keep 1 or 2 bricks/bottles for the end of the trial and use it to get to the shuttle safely with your team.

Always keep 1 (better 2, if you have upgraded your inventory up to 4 slots) bricks or bottles. If you have upgraded a perk, that allows you to use brick/bottle to skip Hider jumpscare – you can avoid being damaged or you can just help your friends with these.

Help your teammates, revive them, do cooperative actions.

Use your rig when it possible, if you found rig recharger – find yourself an opportunity to use it (heal ur teammates; stun enemies; x-ray).

On lower difficulties – use every adrenaline shot you find.

On higher difficulties – share it with your teammates if you’re skilled enough/don’t need it.

Bash blocked doors and barricades.

Avoid any traps, damage, sanity loss.

Disarm traps!

  1. A couple things, some of the positives and negatives have more of an effect on your grade than others, Damage has a huge negative effect, and so does Abandoning a friend, whereas running into sound traps has a very small negative effect on your grade. In terms of positive points, I believe the most heavy one is reviving a friend, but you can only do that 3 times, and then I believe headshots is the next most heavy one, and then everything else it seems has around the same weight. Documents do not seem to count for anything.
I have made an attempt to figure out the exact values of each of the positive and negative things on the list, but it’s really tedious, so I might not have anything concrete for a while. Right now, I’m just planning on using a system of equations, but that most likely won’t get me exact values, so if anyone else has any better ideas, please tell me.

  2. Thanks for the guide. This seems pretty accurate with what adds and subtracts from your overall score. I have only hear theories on it since I haven’t tested it out yet, but I think when the trial starts everyone starts with at least an “A” ranking with getting all the posters bumping it up to an “A+”. It maybe possible that three other players do all the work and collect all the posters then a fourth can just hide at the extraction point the whole time and still receive an “A+”. Not ideal of course and it would be kind of lame but it maybe possible.

    • Also I think stun is probably the best Rig to have solo since if you want an A+ it will help protect you from getting hit from enemies and can be great if you are cornered.

  3. Ive achieved A+ in every mission and found that if you have less than 10 infractions (modifiers on grades that are red/negative) you can get one. Damage appears to hold more weight toward lowering your grade so less than 3 damage too? The system also provides a chance to offset these negatives; the more bricks/bottles thrown, allies saved, items used can help fight against mistakes. I don’t know the ratio (if there even is one), but if feels like a 5:1 for every positive to negate a single infraction?

  4. I think this guide has a lot of misinformation… I have scored A+ without rig spamming/throw-able spamming. Just by playing smart and using items when needed. In addition, the game seems to factor in difficulty of the trial and what you have done to help the team when determining your grade. For example, I have scored A+’s on harder difficulty trials WHILE running into x15 noise traps and taking damage 10x BUT still reviving teammates 3x and saving teammates 4x. It’s a much more complex equation than it shows.

    • Yeah, those help too, but this guide helps get a guaranteed A+s, and certainly has alot of valid tips. Certain actions do reward more towards grades than other stuff. But yeah, since the game just came out, we still need to learn it’s ins and outs.

      • and as for objectives not rewarding additional “points”. Since you dont get xp or rewards til you complete the trial fully, the objectives are already known to be completed. I think it would be too easy if the objectives reward bonus points.

    • Sure man, I was off on my estimates by a little but it’s still just as good as what I had said. Sound trap triggered x25, damage taken x12

My point is we don’t know a lot about the game yet – I know that the guide will be updated but my point is it is not impossible to achieve an A+ while hitting 10+ sound traps and taking damage 10x+. Grading formula is pretty complex

  5. you would think they would want to reward not using the rig, as the rig is a survival tool and if you don’t use it that means you survived without needing additional help if that makes sense
