VTOL VR – Tips and Tricks for Carrier Landing

Carrier land is pretty difficult even in PC based games. So land in VR with actual controllers would make it more difficult. So heres some things to consider.

Tips and Tricks

Tip One

  • Try you best to be as still as possible. The slightest hand movement would be highly detrimental to your landing. Reminder that its not a run way. This is a highway bridge they strapped onto a boat. So even a degree off would make you a “bolter” (I will expand on this later).

Trick for this

  • Once you’re allinged with the carrier (using the nav screen) let go and in a comfortable position where you could stay still grab the joystick again. This eliminates the factor of suddenly turning left or right one you try to actually land.

Tip Two

Memorize the call patterns so you could do more micro adjustments or to just pull off. Some major ones are “wave off” (immediatly raise all landing systems and increase throttle to go away if and only if you are far away from landing)” call the ball”(the carrier recognizez that you are landing so you’ll get a part on your hud that shows if you are too low or too high) “come left/right from line up” (you are slightly off center and need to turn to that direction in order to be aligned)”power/you’re high” (you will need to eather go lower or to pull up) and finnaly “bolter x2” (this means youve touched the carrier but havent properly landed on it).

Trick for this

  • None

Tip Three

  • Once youre all perfect for line up at the last second pull up slightly. This would make your wire catches more likely and less of a chance of a bolter incident. Hold dow your breaks at all time when at the last seconds of landing.

Trick for this

  • Pull to until your angle is in 10-15.

Tip Four

  • Follow through the pree landing checklist. whitch is the following: Fly past the starboard side of the carrier.
  • At 800 ft, Set your Tailhook down.
  • Lower your Landing Gear and slow your aircraft to 250KIAS (use your airbrakes if needed).
  • Set Flaps to mode 2.
  • Descend to 600 ft.
  • Contact Tower for landing clearance and Information
  • Turn to Intercept the Glideslope.
  • Slow to where your Angle of Attack (AoA) is at 8 degrees (adjust power accordingly).
  • At ¾ miles, the LSO will call out “[CALLSIGN], Call the Ball.”
  • Follow the “Meatball” on the HUD to landing: If the Light is low, so are you. If the Light is high, so are you. Try to keep the Ball in the center (Ball will increase brightness when centered).
  • In the final stages of the approach, follow LSO’s guidance as closely as possible. Mind you do not overcorrect with your maneuvers here.
  • Maintain an AoA of 8. Do not flare. Fly the aircraft onto the runway and make contact with the arrestor cables.
  • Upon Contact, Advance Throttle to Afterburner in case you miss the wires to avoid stalling.
  • (If Wire Caught) Set Throttle Idle. Set Hook UP, Set Wings UP, Set Flaps 0, Taxi to Parking Area.
  • (If Wire Missed) Bolter! Monitor Fuel Levels.

Trick for this

  • Just memorize it.

And that is all! this is intended for begeners who have a slight understanding of the game but not really used to it.
