Learn to melee well! Get a duelling sword, and learn to switch to it when threatened! You can zap enemies with your staff, and still switch to your sabre and block when you hear the backstab sound cue.

Your surge staff will not clear pox walkers well, so if they rush you, you’ll have to get your hands dirty. I usually start with a push to make some breathing room, then start chopping.

Thankfully the sabre is so fast that you can stunlock most opponents with it while you move around the horde, make sure you push the group every couple attacks, because your attacks will only stun one enemy, while the push will affect everyone directly in front of you.

Keep listening to the backstab indicator, because you’ll eventually get a couple stragglers behind you that your team missed. Blocking will protect you in a 360 degree angle.

With the sabre’s insane attack speed you won’t have to dodge often, unless you’re cornered by a rager.

With the surge staff you need to position well to both be useful and survive.

Depending on your team, you’ll often have to move toward groups of shooters to stun them before they become a threat.

Unless you have an aggressive front liner on your team (zealot mostly), this will make you a target. Move in a way so they don’t have line of sight to you! If you need to charge your staff or quell, duck behind cover so you’re not a target!

Dodging will probably have a bigger role here, since there is a muzzle flash effect when a shooter targets you, so you’ll know it’s time to dodge. You can also dodge sniper shots. They have a similar, more obvious flash along with a sound effect before firing.
