Official FAQ
How does the Lovecraftian theme affect how we play?
Lovecraftian theme IS the game. The player takes on the role of a cult leader whose sole purpose is to awaken the mighty Cthulhu. Everything the leader can do in the game is either granted to him as sacred knowledge from The Great Old One or his minions or is to please them.
Using the conquest mechanic as an example the leader does not build any fleet. He turns to Cthulhu and the book of Necronomicon to summon Cthulhus monsters to fight. Do monsters cost resources? No! To summon them you need to sacrifice a life which is an honor in the eyes of the sacrificed cult member. After enchanting mantra for a period of time, the cult member is transformed into a horrible beast ready to fight for his master.
What kinds of resources can we gather and use?
Like every Lovecraftian story, the game is set in a world resembling ours. This means that structures need real materials like wood and iron to be built. Also, even though your cultists are ready to sacrifice themselves for the Great Old One, they still need food like clams or corn, robes to stay warm, etc.
But it is a cult led by our God. His ways are not ours to understand, so if he orders you to harvest sheep’s blood to summon demons or capture captives for sacrifices, you will obey!
Even though The Dreamer has all the time in the world, he has very little patience, favor, or knowledge for ephemeral blips like humans. Therefore, these are also something players will always have to gather by performing sacred rituals and whatever The Ancient One desires.
How do we develop our city?
City development in the game is a complex and multifaceted process, intimately tied to the expansion of your cult. As your influence grows, your rituals will attract more followers, each bringing their unique skills to your burgeoning city. These followers are essential for maintaining steady development and thriving logistic chains.
Key to city’s development are the rituals performed in honor of Cthulhu, which grant you new abilities and unlock higher tiers of knowledge and construction. But remember, to unlock the newst posibilities you will need to reach a specific number of faith, generated by your people. The city itself evolves from a humble settlement into a sprawling metropolis, filled with ominous temples, mysterious libraries, and bustling worhshops. Each new building and upgrade is a step closer to awakening Cthulhu, as your city becomes a beacon of dark power and eldritch influence.
How do we upgrade buildings and units?
Upgrading buildings and units is a meticulous process that requires careful management of resources and attention to the needs of your followers. Satisfaction among your cultists is paramount; happy and devoted followers are more productive and more willing to undertake the dangerous tasks necessary for advancement.
Resources gathered from the environment and through rituals are used to enhance your infrastructure, allowing you to construct higher-tier buildings and train more powerful units. The technology tree is a critical component of this progression, with each new level unlocking additional capabilities and strengthening your cult’s position. As you progress, your buildings become more imposing and your units more formidable, reflecting the growing power and influence of your cult.
How do rituals and sacrifices change the game?
Rituals and sacrifices are the lifeblood of your cult, providing the means to gain Cthulhu’s favor and power. These dark ceremonies are not merely for show; they have profound and tangible effects on gameplay. Successful rituals can grant you new hordes of followers, unlock powerful knowledge, and provide critical resources that are crucial to progression.
Sacrifices, whether of animals, resources, or even cult members, are often necessary to appease the Great Old One and ensure the success of your endeavors. These acts of devotion can tip the balance in your favor, allowing you to overcome obstacles and adversaries that would otherwise be insurmountable. As your power grows, so too does the intensity and significance of the rituals.
What are the main threats or challenges we’ll face?
The path to awakening Cthulhu is fraught with dangers and challenges. Internally, you must manage a dynamic and ever-growing society, addressing the needs and desires of your followers while maintaining order and devotion.
Externally, numerous enemies seek to thwart your plans and seize your territory. Additionally, the very nature of the Lovecraftian world poses challenges, with the constant risk of madness and corruption threatening to unravel your efforts. Navigating these dangers is a test of your leadership and strategic acumen, with the fate of your cult hanging in the balance.
