Road to Vostok – Guide to Troubleshooting and Performance

Troubleshooting Guide + FPS Boost

Ву Soul (yhdysvallat).

This is a list of things that have improved performance or fixed issues for me or others, but many of these have NOT been explicitly endorsed by the dev or mods. Don’t change things you don’t understand, use at your own risk, etc.

Game Specific

Verify your game files:

  • [Steam Library] -> Right click on Road to Vostok -> Properties -> Installed Files -> [Verify]

Try disabling Steam overlay:

  • [Steam Library] -> Right click on Road to Vostok -> Properties -> General -> uncheck ‘Enable Steam Overlay’

Disable fullscreen optimizations:

  • [Steam Library] -> Right click on Road to Vostok -> Manage -> Browse Local Files -> Right-click Public_Demo_2_v2.exe -> Compatibility tab -> [check Disable fullscreen optimizations]

Delete shader cache and/or delete the preferences file:

These are found in %appdata%\Godot\app_userdata\Road to Vostok You can copy-paste that line into Run (Win+R) or the address bar of any Windows folder.

  • Verify game files (instructions above) after this
  • Deleting Preferences.tres will reset any graphics setting and keybind changes

Try a different renderer:

  • [Steam Library] -> Right click on Road to Vostok -> Properties -> General tab -> Launch options -> [add –rendering-driver d3d12]
  • Old suggestion was –rendering-driver opengl3, this might cause graphical issues.

Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling and see if there’s a performance difference:

Windows Settings -> System -> Display -> Graphics settings -> [uncheck Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling]. Restart.

  • This changes how draw calls are scheduled and may hurt performance in other games, but right now it improves performance and reduces stuttering in RtV.
  • On my laptop disabling this makes the difference between playable and unplayable.

General System Optimization

Make sure your system is up to date:

  • Update in order: OS, BIOS, chipset, GPU (I recommend using DDU and follow the instructions on their webpage). Restart in between each.

Update or roll back GPU drivers:

  • The newest GPU drivers should work now, but if, not try ones from early 2025.

Make sure Nvidia Low Latency Mode is not forced on in the drivers:

  • If Nvidia Low Latency Mode is enabled it can cause framerate issues currently in RtV.

Make your main display monitor 1 if you have multiple monitors:

Change the port your monitors are plugged into, so that the main display you play games on is also monitor “1” in Windows display settings.

  • This can prevent some current issues on Nvidia cards.

Try different Power Options:

  • Windows Settings -> System -> Power & sleep -> Additional power settings

Some systems (mostly laptops) can unexpectedly have better performance with the Balanced power option instead of High Performance. Most desktops should generally use High Performance. Try different modes and benchmark them.

Turn off fast startup and disable (or don’t use) sleep:

Windows Settings -> System -> Power & sleep -> Additional power settings -> Choose what the power buttons do -> Change settings that are currently unavailable (link up top) -> [uncheck Turn on fast startup] & [uncheck sleep].

  • Fast startup saves some system state information to the drive during shutdown, disabling it gives a clean boot
  • Windows is notorious for sometimes having weird issues with sleep states; you may also choose to disable sleep in ‘Power & sleep’ if you want
  • It’s not often used, but I use Hibernate instead, and I have had no issues with that
