Ships: The Ships of the Sea

Ship types and how to demolish their faces in:

River Boats through to Sub Chasers

If they are swarmed, pick off at the edges to reduce their firepower. Otherwise they don’t have enough firepower to realistically damage you, so can be safely ran towards. (1 shot by mortars, so feel free to use mortars if they are in ports)

Supply Subs

2 depth charges will usually kill supply subs outright, while 1 will force them to surface (and if you hit it perfectly make cause them to begin to sink). They only have a cannon on the front and are not very intelligent, so simply stay behind and unload your hot lead into them.

Tankers / Merchants

Usually travels in groups with patrol boats. If they don’t notice you they will usually not make course changes (and even then, will only make minor ones), so can easily be hit with unguided torpedoes.

Mortars are also an effective weapon, as you can conceal yourself in smoke and lob shells at them while they will not fire through smoke. Use mortars if you have guided torpedoes, It’s usually better to save the torpedoes for bigger, badder targets.

Fubuki class

The first true challenge in the campaign, unless you know what you are doing. Usually, tail destroyers to ports and fire unguided torpedoes at the immobile destroyers. If they are going to one of your raids or one of your bases, use the same methods as with tankers but be more careful, as they have more and bigger cannons. If you have guided torps (which, ideally you have the 1 big guided torp and not 2 small ones), pick off the screen ships through smoke and fire torps when only destroyer(s) are left.

Akizuki class

So you want to fight the big boys, do you? Same rules as fubuki, only that you’ll need some odd 20 torps or to use both torps and mortar fire. At day, the bofors / 50cal squadmate has much more range than their shredders, and WILL fire through smoke. Don’t have more than 2, though, or you’ll need to use much more ammo for the smoke. NEVER get into your own gun range, because you will die instantly. generally, keep them in the furthest third of your minimap.

Planes: the Ships of the Not-The-Sea

Just tag them and make sure your weapons are manned, it really isn’t that hard. Try not to get shot too much.

Forts: the Forts of the Sea

Go to either edge so that all the artillery is from one direction, and attack at night. Bring a full squad, usually. Smoke on the artillery pieces, not on yourself.

If there are ships docked at the port and you would like to destroy them, it may be worth placing smoke on yourself (as the ships will be far enough from the artillery that they will each need their own smoke).

  1. My question is: I’m doing early game port invasions (against ports with no ships), and I’ll destroy all of the ground defenses (and whatever planes there are), and then back out, and see that somehow the defenders still have more stuff to destroy. So I go back in, rinse and repeat. Is this the normal way to do it, or am I missing something?

    • you only have to do a big dent, the invasion kills the rest. About half of what they have is enough to trigger an invasion.

    • You have to do a port raid, it will lower the strength number of that port, and then the AI will send in the big guns to do an actual landing and take over the fort. You personally cannot change the port from red to blue.

    • I’ve played like 2-3hours, so take this advice with a grain of salt. To find subs (I’ve done it 3 times now), I just go straight forwards from where I was oriented at spawn, and turn on the fast-forward to max. Eventually the subs appear on Radar.
