Bounty Train – Useful Tips and Tricks

Some of the knowledge could be considered “spoilers,” but I will outline a couple of the basics.

Tips and Tricks

General

  • Invest in your combat ability. Buy the best guns you can find etc.
  • Explosives are your friends. Buy the cheap ones, $75 base price.
  • Buy medicines, cheap ones at first. Equip 2x Explosive, 3x Medicine per character.
  • Fires should be put out ASAP.
  • Try to take advantage of the cover your train provides. You can for example move each time a rifleman is about to shoot.
  • Often it makes sense to concentrate fire on 1 aggressor, at least till they are severely wounded.
  • Always have a fighting skill active. Let fighting skills level up through use, ie. when character levels up, it’s best to select perks to increase damage, critical chance or agility.
  • Potions for agility, which reduces reload time, eventually make battles trivial.
  • Bit of a cheese, but if you are losing badly you can restart the battle even in “one-life”/no save mode if you quit to the main menu before you actually die/loco explodes. When you click “Continue” you get to re-do the battle from the start.

Defense

The game will randomly place criminals along a route. Frequency is much higher on routes that haven’t been recently traveled. If you are low on cash/compromised by a recent large purchase, don’t push into areas you haven’t recently been. This can be referred too as “opening routes.”

When opening routes:

  • Don’t carry a full load of Jewelry which will increase the chance of an attack.
  • Avoid running empty. A slow train sustains less damage when hitting a blockade.
  • Don’t carry too many highly flammable cargoes.

Watch out for wanted criminals. They are the strongest in the game. Make sure you are watching the map closely enough as not to be “surprised.”

After considerations of profit, don’t forget to add a couple levels of fire protection to your engine and carriages.

PS. Train mounted guns are not a good investment. They add extra weight to your train reducing the amount of cargo you can carry and therefore the profit you can generate.
