The way you kill an animal affects its star rating, I have not gotten higher than one star when using the spear but see the following when using my bow.

• 1 Star – I killed the animal in multiple hits
• 2 Star – I killed the animal in one hit but did not get a head shot or mortal wound
• 3 Star – I killed the animal in one hit with a head shot or mortal wound

Mortal wounds percentage is raised with your hunter skill.

In terms of the 4 animals loot tables you get the following when processing an animal on the butchers block:

Rabbits

• 1 Star – Pelt, bones, meat
• 2 Star – Pelt, bones, meat, pituitary gland
• 3 Star – Pelt, bones, pituitary gland, loin

Wolves

• 1 Star – Pelt, bones, meat
• 2 Star – Pelt, bones, meat, wolf’s blood
• 3 Star – Pelt Bones, wolf’s blood, wolf’s heart

Wolf hearts can be cooked but are also a rare ingredient in alchemy so I recommend not cooking them.

Deer

While Bucks and Doe’s are different, their loot tables are the same

• 1 Star – Pelt, bones, meat
• 2 Star – Pelt, bones, meat, Deer Entrails
• 3 Star – Pelt, bones, Deer Entrails, Venison Steak

Boars

• 1 Star – Pelt, bones, meat
• 2 Star – Pelt, bones, meat, Boar fat
• 3 Star – Pelt, bones, Boar Fat, Boar Ribs

Hunting Mastery: 20 rabbits, 10 3-Star Bucks, 20, 3-Star Boars, 20 3-Star Wolves

Though to each their own, I believe that the 30/30 + regen on game meat is more valuable, I usually attempt to get a 2-star rating for my boars and rabbits because their rare meats only grant HP (for a boar) and stamina (for a rabbit).

Pack them away and consume the 2-star meats to save 10 3-star bucks (not does), 20 3-star boar, and 20 3-star wolves from the early game.
