I’ve noticed a handful of threads in the last few days regarding how “hud_fastswitch 1” no longer works and lamenting the fact that you now have to scroll through the different weapons categories and then click to select the one you want.

First off, that’s always been the case in HL1. I still play on the original 1.1.1.0 WON version and that’s how it works there too. Proper fast-switching by double-tapping the number keys wasn’t implemented until HL2. Anyone who suggests otherwise is misremembering.
Secondly, that being said, there is a workaround to make weapon selection a bit less clunky. Go to your steamapps>common>Half-Life>valve folder and edit your “userconfig.cfg” file (create one if it isn’t there already) and add the following bind command:
- Bind mwheelup “invprev; +attack; wait; -attack”
- Bind mwheeldown “invnext; +attack; wait; -attack”
Congratulations. Now scrolling up or down on your mousewheel will smoothly cycle forward or back through your entire weapons inventory, insta-switching to each as you go. If you don’t want to use the mousewheel, just substitute “mwheelup/down” with your preferred input, like number keys, etc.
