Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX – Guide to Monster Lifespan

Managing your monsters time to walk this earth is important to maximize winning the game. What game? The game of life of course! The problem however is that you don’t know how long you have with any given monster until it runs out, a great metaphor for real life too I suppose but this is a video game so why don’t we just cheat and find out how long or little that little git has?

Monster Lifespan Guide

Intro

I’ll be blunt and straight to the point here, the values and estimates are based on maximum lifespan for a monster which can only be achieved by doing absolutely nothing (resting) every week.

This would be pointless for obvious reasons but I want to point it out now because everything else will lower lifespan even further so you will find your Monster dies noticeably faster than these values suggest because everything from training to battling to even playing a game together is eating into its lifespan.

Furthermore the Nintendo Switch and Steam re-release, which version are they based on? We genuinely don’t know at the time of me writing this guide but that is important too because in the original Japanese version the monsters had even shorter lifespans by -100 weeks apparently so if you notice your Pixie dies every time you blink, that could be a contributing factor.

Finally Monster Rancher 1 data is harder to obtain because it didn’t get a European release, instead Monster Rancher 2 was released as Monster Rancher 1 in Europe and while I enjoy both games, it is clear the sequel had a lot more polish and was a more popular title too.

Okay let me preempt the following questions right now since you probably just looked at the table and decided what monster you wanted. Galaxy is a Monol but is unique in the fact it has the longest achieve-able lifespan of the Monol family. To obtain it use the Star Wars soundtrack and it should be obtainable immediately at the start of a new game.

Next up is that 1 week lifespan Sueki Suezo, this simply requires the Monster Rancher 1 disk and it has extremely high stats but exists purely for breeding and can be helpful for unlocking the Ghost as well, you can feed it food that extends lifespan but given you can have as many of these as you want and they exist purely to be merged anyway it does seem rather pointless to try and extend its short lifespan.

Worms cocoon after a time and what you get from the cocoon can be quite interesting, the process doesn’t directly affect lifespan but the result of it might, cocooning is such a broad topic it is way outside the scope of this guide to try and cover it.

On the subject of scope, there are many special breeds that are “Monster Type/???” that usually change the rules on lifespan, for example Kasumi which is obtained by using Dead or Alive (of course) has the highest lifespan of any Pixie but given there are probably hundreds of these secret monsters, I just didn’t cover them.

As a general rule pure-breeds will have the longest lifespan, followed by merging with a long lifespan monster, so a Pixie+Plant will very likely live longer than a Pixie purebreed. Of course there are exceptions such as Joker, where every crossbreed lives longer than a purebreed Joker and Ducken which has the same problem combined with the fact it only crossbreeds with Golem and Suezo. Also yes, Ghosts can die ironically and do not crossbreed with anything either.

Abrupt Outro

You may have noticed the guide has gaps for MR1 which I already explained and also feels unfinished in general.

That is because I started writing this guide as the game gleefully downloaded and was very excited to be ready to play this new Steam port and support the game so maybe other MR games get a release, only for the game to just…Not work. I mean that literally too, refuses to boot claiming I am missing a .dll file that I am not missing, so I copy it over to the install directory since that is clearly the issue and then the game says “okay, well I don’t want to run anyway”. It gave me an error message before but no such luck this time it just refuses to boot.

So I refunded it, what else can I do? I am sure they will patch this problem in the future, whatever it is but I can actually just play MR1 & 2 that I legally own anyway, I only bought this to show support and what a kick in my own face when what I actually got was no support from the company I was doing a favor too, wow!

So if you discover anything that is exclusive to the new versions please add it to the comment section below because while not ideal, it is the best I can offer. While these games are nostalgic for me, I am not literally spending money to not get a product.

  1. What doesn’t your monster rancher 2 lifespan list, show how long a Dragon Lives ?
I see under monster rancher it say short but it’s not listed under the monster rancher 2 list.

  2. Hello, sorry in advance but my english is not good.
I recently managed to get Zilla, I trained him in Pull and Swim, he was hardly ever so tired (with arms down), but Colt told me several times that Zilla was stressed, when this happened I gave him Mint Leaf or a Rest. However, he only lived 150 weeks, I don’t know if the training I gave him really took many weeks off his life, but it seems strange to me considering that he can live 450 weeks just chilling. Anyway, I’ll give Zilla a golden peach.
Do you know what really happened?
    Thanks you for the help!
PD: I’m playing monster rancher 2 on ps1, not the deluxe version.

  3. Just started playing and my 1st disc brought me an Pixie called Poison. Pretty strong early stats (int & ski) and cool look. Despite the fact that i enjoy most the Pow/Def monsters, i decided to give it a try. Reached Rank B on iMA, everything going just fine when suddely, on 2wk of dec 1003 , she simply died and i got like: WTF!!!!!! I’m still “shocked” because she never got “too tired”, sick, injuried or anything else. almost 100 of affinity and in good stats.

Any ideas to explain why it happened?

Thanks for the help and congrats for the good guide!

    • A lot of various things affect a monsters lifespan so I can only speculate.
3 years is a pretty par Pixie lifespan honestly given you probably couldn’t afford to feed her meat from the first few weeks as well as just learning the game in general.

You also mentioned she never got “too tired” this is the game being obtuse, if Holly tells you the monster is “tired” then the damage is done and they have already lost lifespan, but they give clear visual cues as to how tired they are, usually by being slouched over as they walk and very sluggish o you really want to learn to avoid that or do what everyone else does and just feed them a mint and taffy EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

  4. also have to consider that this version is the same as the jp version meaning -100 weeks of lifespan compared to what you are stating currently.

  5. wait… they loose lifespan from just being tired?
I did the training option right away and after the 4 weeks my monster was very tired. So the training option means you loose a lot of money, your monster looses lifespan, it takes an entire month away and it barely makes a difference to your monsters stats?
I never played monster rancher before and was a bit confused about this “lifespan” mechanic and now I fear I did everything wrong, just by trying out the game. (BTW I’m talking about Monster Rancher 1)

    • They lose life from everything you do, you are trying to maximize their lifespan in spite of it ticking away so yes them being tired will kill them faster. Training is the only way to learn new skills so it is a necessary evil.
Don’t worry about making mistakes, Monster Rancher is a super casual friendly game honestly and raising various monsters is most of the fun.

  6. One way to prolong a monsters life, at least in MR1 is take a favorite monster, only train it on the 4th week of every month, feed it meat every 1st week as well as mint and taffy and then freeze it. annoyingly slow way to level, but I have a Gamer Gali that is like 5 years old now using this method. It was mostly found out by the late Lisa Shock, a Monster Rancher pro, it seems to still work because meat adds a week of life for every time it’s used and taffy and mint counter tiredness… so while you won’t do much very quickly, if you have nothing better to do and have a really good monster you like. yeah it’s worth it.
