Unmissable

These are non-story related achievements, but are still impossible to miss.

Forgotten Pieces
Discover your first Forgotten Piece.

(I’m pretty sure this one is impossible to miss since the game forces you collect the first one in the first chapter. If not, just walk up to one of the scrolls on the ground to collect it. It looks like the one in the picture for this achievement. There are plenty of them in the first chapter that are in plain sight. Just collect one to get the achievement.)

Thank you.
Use your power as a Reader to heal Quill for the first time.

The game makes you do this as part of a tutorial. Just grab Quill and lift up. On the Vive controllers, this is the left or right trigger.

The First Trial
Defeat the Screechers first encountered in the Mire.

To get this achievement you have to defeat the Screechers first encountered in the Mire. Should be impossible to miss.

Tools of the Enemy
Use a Screecher to unlock the path forward.

When you grab an enemy, you can drag it around to move it. Doing this is required for several puzzles in the game, so it’s unmissable.

Optional / Missable Achievements

Hedge Knight
Use Quill’s sword to cut down a lot of grass.

Throughout the game, you will see many tall patches of grass. Swing your sword to cut it down until you get the achievement.

Nice work, friend!
Give Quill a high five.

There are several points in the game where Quill will try to give you a high five. One of them is after the puzzle with the rotating cylinder shaped platform thing with the two buttons on the side. There’s another after you get off an elevator in the mines. There are several more opportunities in the Twilight Garden. Don’t leave Quill hanging!

Thorn in Our Side
Guide Quill to destroy multiple thorn patches.

There are many thorn patches throughout the game, Some of which are required to be cut down. Use your sword to cut them down until you get the achievement.

Battle for Control
Take control over many Forged enemies.

I don’t know how many enemies you need to control, but just keep grabbing different enemies until you get the achievement.

I’m not scared!
Startle Quill from behind.

To get this one, have Quill face away from you, then move your head as close as you can right behind her. She will get startled and spin around.

A Sacred Oath
Light the torches of the Knights of the Sun.

In the room with the first Twilight Garden portal, there are four torches in two separate rooms. Use your hand and grab them to light them. (On the Vive controllers, this is with the triggers).

Ghostface Crushah
Use your power as a Reader to break many objects.

If you grab one of the breakable containers with your hand, it will break. Keep doing this until you get the achievement. (On the Vive controllers, this is with the triggers.)

Clever Shooting
Destroy a Forged enemy with a controlled Scorcher.

Grab a Scorcher (the one with the gun) and use it to kill another enemy. (On the Vive controllers, use the trigger to grab it, and use the right touchpad to get it to shoot.)

Idiurus Macrotis
Destroy a Forged enemy with an aerial attack.

You can do an aerial attack by jumping off a ledge and attacking mid-air. You might need to either weaken the enemy first or do this more than once to kill it.

Creative Cliffhanger
Find a low-hanging path to the town pub.

Near the pub in the city, there is a puzzle where you have to use a train thing to get up to the second level. Use the movable block on the right to jump onto it and hang of the edge of the roof. Then use one of the gun enemies to shoot the crystal to get it to move while you are hanging off the edge.

Pub Smash!
Break everything within the town pub that can be broken.

The pub is one of the rooms where you get one of the keys from a treasure chest (the other one being the church). Break every breakable object in the pub to get this achievement.

A Forged Maestro
Destroy two or more Screecher enemies with a controlled Ticker.

The “easiest” place to get this is the last area in the second to last chapter (the place where you get stuck in the room and Starthing will mention something about “powerful arcane hexes”). You need to grab one of the exploding enemies and use it to kill two enemies at once. You will need to weaken the enemies a bit before the explosion, so smack a few with your sword first. The use Quill to lure the enemies near the explode-y one. If you need to try again, you should go to the menu and use the “restart checkpoint” to reset the room and try again. Otherwise you will need to restart the whole chapter to get to this point in the game.

Protector of the Realm
Rescue Argus without a single death.

Pretty self explanatory, but there is some cheese. Some people have said that when you die you will have a short window of time to pop open the menu and hit “restart checkpoint” before the game will count the death. Since the game saves at every room change, you won’t lose that much progress.

Also, you NEED to do this on a fresh save file. You CANNOT do this by selecting the first chapter on a save where you have already died.

I do want to mention that on my playthrough, this didn’t work for me. I’m MOSTLY certain that I restarted quickly enough, but maybe not. So here is an alternative.

The game saves the save files in the appdata folder. You can find it at:

  • C:\Users[Your Username]\AppData\Local\MossGame\Saved\SaveGames

The save file for the first save slot is SaveGame_0.sav. The second save slot is SaveGame_1.sav. The third save slot is SaveGame_2.sav.

Every once and a while, just make a copy of the file. If you die, delete the file and rename the copy to the appropriate save file name.

One more thing that I want to mention. While the game doesn’t tell you whether or not you have died and will or won’t get the achievement, you can still find out. In the save file there is a phrase the save file will use to determine whether or not you died on that save. If you open the save file in notepad, hit ctrl+f to do a search and look for “bHasQuillDied”. If this phrase is anywhere in the save file, that means you died once, and you WON’T get the achievement. If it doesn’t appear anywhere, then you’re still on track to get the achievement.

Theoretically it should be possible to remove that phrase to “clean” the save file of your recorded death, but it’s not that easy. In my attempts the game either ignored the save file entirely and pretended it didn’t exist, or outright crashed the whole game on launch. I never did figure out how to do it, but you’re more than welcome to try.

Twilight Garden

There are three portals in the game that lead to the Twilight Garden. If you see a small green glowing light near a wall, that is an entrance. Just walk up to it and Quill will use the Glass to open it.

First portal:

Second portal (under the entrance to the mines that you need to go in):

Third portal:

The Twilight Garden
Enter the Twilight Garden alongside Quill.

In Champion’s Clothes
Find new armor in the Twilight Garden.

You get the new armor for finishing the first test in the Twilight Garden

Shot Through the Heartwood
Find a new sword in the the Twilight Garden.

You get the new sword for finishing the second test in the Twilight Garden.

(Also I just realized that the description for this achievement says “the the”. That was not my typo, but I’m leaving it in anyway.)

All Roads Lead
Find all three portals to the Twilight Garden.

Best Held with Her
Defeat the Recast Commander to earn a blessing.

This is the final test in the Twilight Garden. Defeat the boss to get this achievement.

Some Tips:

  • Be ready to move to the other platforms to avoid the aerial attacks. The platform will have a red outline when it is being attacked.
  • During the aerial attack phase, always have your sword charged up to be ready for shooting the crystals.
  • On the middle platform, there are two walls that will protect you from attacks from the enemies on the outside platform. Use this to your advantage if you need to heal.
  • On the second aerial attack phase, the Recast Commander will not attack the platform you’re currently on, but will take turns attacking the middle, then the outside platforms. Again, pay attention for the red lines to see which ones are being attacked.
  • When the boss is on the middle platform with you, pay attention for the long attack animation when the boss makes a melee attack. Be sure to move to the side to avoid being hit.
  • After the melee attack the boss may attack several more times in quick succession. These secondary attacks are always towards the left and right side of the platform, so be sure to dodge the main attack, then stick to the front or back of the platform to dodge the secondary attacks.
  • When the Recast Commander shoots his bombs in the air, be sure to keep moving. The bombs will land where you are when they are initially shot out. So as long as you keep moving, you wont get hit. You will have some time before they land, so throw in some attacks while moving.

You lookin’ at me?
Fist bump the Toad after a staring contest.

Use your hand to poke the frog. After a bit, the frog will extend it’s hand for a fist bump.

Bugs for Dinner
Feed the Toad three dragonflies.

There are several red pointy flowers in the Twilight Garden. Use your hand (your real hand, not Quills hand) to shake the flowers. A dragonfly will pop out and the Toad will eat it. There are three of these flowers.

Dust

Dust Collector I
Collect a small amount of Relic Dust.

Dust Collector II
Collect a large amount of Relic Dust.

What Remains of Power
Collect all of the Relic Dust.

How to Collect Dust:

  • Throughout the game, you will see many breakable objects. These objects include, wooden boxes, wooden barrels, wooden carriages (those things on wheels that you attach to horses to carry large amounts of things), clay pots, the wooden seats in the church. Basically anything that makes a crunchy noise when you hit it with your sword will drop dust when broken. Some larger objects will take multiple hits to break, so keep swinging. All dust is automatically collected when the object is broken. You can also break these objects with your hands (there’s also an achievement for doing this).

You need to break ALL the objects to get the “What Remains of Power” achievement. Every last one.

I’m not screenshot-ing every object you need to break because that would take to long but here are some tips:

  • On the chapter select screen, you can see how much dust you have collected in each chapter. Use this to see what chapters you need to clear still.
  • Some objects will leave behind broken pieces when broken. That might make it hard so see if all the objects are broken. Be sure to break all the objects.
  • Move your head around. Some of the breakable objects are pretty will hidden. Move your head around the map. Look for hiding places.
  • You can break objects with your hands. All the objects can be broken by Quill with the sword, but if you want to multitask, you can use your hands if you want. Since all dust in collected automatically, you don’t need to worry about collecting it manually.

The Author’s Plan (Forgotten Fragments)

The Author’s Plan
Collect all of the forgotten fragments.

For this achievement you need to collect ALL the fragments. There are 31 total fragments to collect.

Tips:

  • Use the chapter select screen to see how many you need to collect in each chapter.
  • Not all rooms have a fragment.
  • In rooms where there are fragments, there will only be one per room.
  • Move your head. Some of these are hidden pretty well.
