VoltAge: Genesis – How to Transfer Your Save Files after Updating

It works doesn’t like when I try to merge with baseline for updates, so I created a guide to explain how to easily transfer your saves over to the updated version.

Why This Guide Is Needed

Normally, when using Steam Works, a developer is given the option to create new “builds” using a “standard” option (which simply creates a brand new copy of the game on the user’s device while deleting any old files), or a “merge with baseline” option (which supposedly acts as a smooth update for all existing files and folders on a user’s device). For some reason, I can’t get the “merge with baseline” option to work for this project, with every attempt resulting in an [Error: Failure] message that offers no explanation as to what the actual issue is.

That being said, I will provide a very simple guide on how to keep your old save files after an update.

How To Transfer Save Files

  1. Download the updated version of the game. Everything is going well so far!
  2. Locate your Steam Folder. Generally, it will default to Program Files (x86) in your main (local) disk drive.
  3. Once you locate the folder named Steam, open it.
  4. In the list of files and folders, you should see a folder named steamapps…open it.
  5. In the new list of files and folders, open the folder named common.
  6. You should now see a list of folders named after various installed Steam games and apps…locate and open the folder named VoltAgeGenesis.
  7. You should now see folders which correspond to each of the “versions” of the game which you have previously downloaded (i.e. VoltAgeGenesis92), with higher numbers indicating more recent versions of the game.
  8. Locate the folder for the previous version (i.e., if you have just downloaded version 92, you will be looking for VoltAgeGenesis91). Open it.
  9. You should now see a folder called www…open it.
  10. Inside the www folder, you should see a folder called save.
  11. You need to “Cut” the ENTIRE save folder from the previous version of the game, and “Paste” it into the www folder for the updated version.
  12. At this point, you should be able to launch the game and access your old saves as normal.
