BioShock 2 Remastered – How to Fix Fontaine Futuristics Crash

This guide will show you how to fix the random crashes that appear in the Lab-part of the Fontaine Futuristics level.

Introduction

Сrеdit gоеs to Qthulhu !

Bioshock 2 has a tendency to crash on the Fontaine Futuristics map, after having gone to the lab. For me personally it always happened as I was fighting a Big Daddy. This issue was present in the original non-remastered game and the remastered version unfortunately doesn’t change it.

The issue could be fixed in the original version by simply changing some graphics settings in the menu, however these settings have been hidden away in the Remastered Version, making it difficult to find.

The graphics settings we’re looking for is Super High Detailled Actors and Texture Detail. We’ll have to reduce them or turn them off, which will make your game look a bit worse, but it’s better to have a playable game that looks a bit worse than to have one that isn’t playable at all.

Small Disclaimer: The images used in this guide were taken on a German Windows OS, but I’ve included them anyways because the layout stays the same and I figured it may help those who don’t usually change configuration ini files.

Step 1: Finding the Bioshock Configuration.ini

To find the configuration ini in which we’re gonna change some settings you simply click into the search bar in your Windows task bar and type in “%Appdata%” (without the “” but the % are important!) and then click on the folder that will come up.

You should now be in a folder called “Roaming” if you’ve done everything correctly. From there on, find and navigate to the “BioshockHD” folder and then double click the Bioshock2 folder. Once you’re there you should see a “Bioshock2SP.ini” file.

Now you wanna right click that ini file and then Open With -> Notepad to then be able to edit the values.

Step 2: Changing the Values

Now that you have the ini file opened in your Notepad, press CTRL+F to open the search window. Now search for SuperHighDetailActors like in the image below.

You will then see “SuperHighDetailActors=True”, change it to “SuperHighDetailActors=False”. If you scroll a tiny bit down you will see that this value exists twice. I’m not sure if it changes much, but I recommend setting both to false just to be safe.

We’re not done yet! Next up you wanna open the search window by pressing CTRL+F again and type in TextureDetail. Normally it will be set to High (TextureDetail=High), but you wanna set it to “Medium” (TextureDetail=Medium) instead.

Now that you’ve changed the values of these three settings, either press CTRL+S to save or save manually by clicking File -> Save and then close the Notepad.

Step 3: Play the Game

If you’ve done everything right you can now play the game without having to worry about it crashing.

I hope the guide was helpful!
