Diorama Disappearing Fix
Symptoms
Mounted trophies can disappear from lodge stands. The affected stands may display ? or appear empty. The missing animals do not appear in taxidermy storage either, effectively making them inaccessible to the player.
The issue has been reported after closing the game for approximately 20 minutes and then reloading.
The issue has been reproduced in two separate player saves with Steam IDs 76561199510803720 and 76561198350289504.
What the Save Data Shows
In SaveData.nrgs, the GameData chunk (d37cc32b) contains an inventory section (f8cb0e95) with container records in the format [GUID] 01 01 len [GUID] count {slot, itemGUID}.
Lodge stand slots are container records whose GUIDs are referenced by world chunks. In the affected saves, these references are found in world chunks 11286a96 and 063c74d0.
A correctly displayed mounted trophy follows this chain:
- Lodge slot container, referenced by a world chunk
- Diorama item
- Diorama’s own container
AnimalItem
Broken Mount States
The missing trophies can occur in two different states.
Mount on an Unplaced Diorama
The Diorama item remains at the root of the inventory, in no slot container, while its own container still contains the AnimalItem.
Because the AnimalItem is not at the root of the inventory, taxidermy storage does not show it. Because the Diorama is not in a slot, the lodge does not show it.
The trophy is therefore unreachable.
The first affected save contained 25 animals in this state. The second contained 13.
Diorama in a Deleted Slot
In the second state, a Diorama item remains inside a slot container that is no longer referenced by any world chunk.
The slot where the Diorama was placed no longer exists.
The second affected save contained one Diorama in this state.
Likely Cause
The cause is inferred and has not been confirmed.
When a lodge stand or slot is removed or rebuilt on load, the Diorama may become detached from the slot while its AnimalItem remains in the Diorama’s container.
In the second case, the slot’s world record may be deleted while the inventory still points to it.
This may be a save-order problem. The world chunk and inventory chunk may be saved out of sync, for example while the lodge level is not loaded.
Repair on Load
After both the inventory and world have been loaded, check every Diorama item:
- Check whether it is in a slot container.
- Check whether any loaded world stand actually references that slot.
- If the Diorama is not in a valid slot, move each
AnimalItemout of the Diorama’s container to the root of the inventory so it returns to taxidermy storage. - If the Diorama is in a slot container that no world stand references, move the Diorama to the root of the inventory so it returns to Diorama storage.
- Save.
This procedure was performed manually on both affected saves, and the CRCs and the rest of the data remained valid.
Preventing the Issue
Handle Stand or Slot Removal as a Single Operation
When removing a stand or slot, return the Diorama’s contents to storage and then return the Diorama itself to storage before the slot’s record is destroyed.
Save World and Inventory State Atomically
Write the world stand slots and inventory containers from the same state during the same save pass.
Never write the world chunk while the lodge is not loaded if that causes its slot records to be dropped.
Add a UI Safety Net
Either:
- List mounted but unplaced Dioramas in storage so they can be placed again.
- Prevent that state from ever being saved.
