The game is built in a way that you can’t find any items in a single playthrough. Only replaying and replaying you learn how to get all the major items. Sleep scroll is one very common loot, you find it in Mulanhey’s chest, in cloackwood, at High hedge, at sourcerous sundries, in other places and often as random tresure. in a playthrough you should find it, I don’t know, at least 10-20 scrolls, maybe more. Plus the wand in the shops.

There are two rings of wizardry. The first one is easy to miss. It’s in the bole of a tree on the Friendly Arm Inn map. Unless you know it’s there, or walk around pulsing the highlight key rapidly, you’ll probably walk right by it. The second one is easier to find. It’s held by a mage in a house in south west Baldur’s gate. If you walk into the houses south west of the Flaming Fist Headquarters, you’ll be attacked by a mage. Kill him and the ring is yours.
