Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder – Late-Game Fishing and Commercial Strategy

Fishing + Commercial Late-Game Strategy

The author considers Fishing + Commercial the best combination for the late game. The strategy focuses on establishing an effectively infinite supply of gold and triggers, then building a setup that can scale Range, building duplication, Mult, and point generation.

Early Game

The main goals in the early game are:

  • Spam two buildings to reach the point threshold.
  • Spam Gold Pans.
  • Check every shop for items that can help assemble an infinite setup.
  • Do not ban any buildings.

Look for combinations involving:

  • Ghostpaint
  • Wildpaint
  • Effects that ignore building restrictions
  • Duplication Potions
  • Moving Potions
  • Marketplace

Usually, having two or three of these components together with a Marketplace is enough to go infinite.

Mid Game

Once you have nearly infinite gold, start searching for the components needed for the late-game setup.

The main targets are:

  • Top Hat or Jester Hat to obtain three Cauldrons
  • Artist for the third consumable slot
  • An infinite roll engine
  • An infinite delete engine
  • Around 100 Dismisses
  • The buildings required for the late-game setup

The current late-game building setup described by the author consists of:

BuildingRole in the setup
CraneRange
2x LighthousePart of the late-game setup
ClipperMoney
Gardener’s CottageDuplication
VaultPoints
Fishing HutMult
Field HospitalScaling the Fishing Hut
PlateausUsed with the duplication setup

The setup also requires an infinite engine. One described approach uses Railway together with Marketplace, Conduits, Ballistas, or Wild Way Station. These components are duplicated throughout the map with Gardener’s Cottage. The goal is to fill the map with Railways and then delete the paths.

While still in the mid game, use Wild effects to spread the engine and Wild the Fishing Hut to start scaling its Mult early.

You can obtain a large number of potions through the three consumable slots and by dismissing buildings throughout the game. The potions will eventually run out, so you should use the available ones rather than saving them indefinitely.

Building Upgrades

Try to obtain as many Building Upgrades as possible. The author specifically mentions:

  • Timberframing: Makes the engine proc every week.
  • Masonry: Improves the Fishing Hut.
  • Winch: Used for one Crane that can be buffed and then duplicated toward the edges of the map. Buildings can be built beyond the visible screen.
  • Plumbing: Can provide a better Conduit-to-score ratio and/or enable an eight-sided Gardener’s Cottage.

Late Game

Once the engine is running, use it to scale the rest of the setup.

Things to consider include:

  • Letting Hazards remain so they can be scaled through the Voodoo Doll.
  • Ingots, which the author considers broken.
  • Flanged Mace, which can be used to fix a bad engine.
  • Statuettes, which are a powerful way to scale Votes and which the author thinks might be key to the strategy.
  • Obtaining Legendary items.
  • Obtaining items that provide Enchants.
  • Getting Hourglasses and similar items.

Once the late-game setup is established, spread its components using Wild Gardener’s Cottages and Cranes and aim for the highest-scaling Heirlooms possible in the late game.

Final Scoring

Do not use Jewelry Boxes for the final scoring phase. They increase turn times by 20x.

Overall Progression

The strategy can be summarized as follows:

  1. Get effectively infinite money and triggers.
  2. Obtain three Cauldrons and a third consumable slot, allowing around 300+ potions to be obtained through them.
  3. Get effectively infinite Range using Cranes and attribute manipulation.
  4. Get effectively infinite building duplication using Gardener’s Cottage and attribute manipulation.
  5. Get effectively infinite Mult by giving a Fishing Hut global Range and using attribute manipulation.
  6. Duplicate Plateaus globally with Gardener’s Cottage.
  7. Duplicate point-scoring buildings and the ways of triggering them throughout the map.
  8. Continue scaling the setup with the available late-game items, upgrades, and Heirlooms.

Dismiss Reset Bug

There is a bug involving Rainbow Flag and Politician that can reset your Dismisses. If it works as described, this may allow you to obtain around 700 potions outside of shops.

Theoretical Self-Replicating Setup

The author believes it may theoretically be possible to create a self-replicating setup that destroys and rebuilds itself. Such a setup could potentially generate infinite points by getting around the retrigger limit.

This has not been established as a working strategy. The author has not yet attempted to build it because they do not consider their current Vault/Clipper runs sufficiently min-maxed to move on to this approach.

The author also notes that the way Warehouses work would need to be calculated for this theoretical setup.
