Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars – Beginners Tips with Keybinds Customization Advice

Tips for New Players

Сrеdit gоеs to Alio!

Okay, sometimes you might need to restart a mission, especially if things go sideways. Mixing units is crucial, especially in bigger missions like Sarajevo, where you might face tough enemies like Flame Troopers that can wreck your APCs and infantry.

Snipers are your go-to for dealing with tough infantry units, as they can one-shot them easily, especially when set to aggressive mode. Remember that each unit has its strengths and weaknesses, so having a diverse mix of units is key.

Don’t hesitate to pump out basic infantry units, even if a tank-heavy approach seems tempting, as tanks alone can struggle against infantry. It’s like a rock-paper-scissors situation.

Restarting missions to give them another shot is pretty common, especially for the tougher ones. When you find a good position, don’t forget to save your progress.

Each faction in the game has its own strengths and weaknesses. GDI units are powerful and versatile, while Nod has specialized troops that excel in certain situations.

Don’t overlook unit upgrades, especially for basic infantry and tanks. They can make a big difference in battles.

Remember, you can repair your vehicles, allowing you to defend with minimal losses while you build up your forces. You can even capture enemy units with engineers to bolster your defenses.

Keybinds Customization

Some good customization of keybinds helps a ton.

For example:

  • W – Force Move (Run over pesky infantry)
  • A – Attack Move (Targets Units Only)
  • S – Reverse Move
  • D – Aggressive Move (Targets Units + Structures)
  • Units Abilities – Shift+W/A/S/D
  • F – Guard Stance
  • Shift+F – Aggressive Stance
  • C – Hold Stance
  • Shift+C – Hold Fire
  • Forward Mouse Button – Stop
  • Back Mouse Button – Scatter (Don’t let your infantry get run over!)
  • Q – Power
  • E – Sell
  • R – Repair
  • Z– Structure Tab
  • X – Support Tab
  • Shift+Q – Aircraft Tab
  • Shift+E – Infantry Tab
  • Shift+R– Vehicle Tab
  • V – Planning Mode
  • [ – Select All Units of this type
  • ] – Select All Units

The only thing you should have to rebind is Voice Chat/Mode to T and Y, which is only because you can’t leave empty keybinds, they reset to default on relaunch. You will need to clear a lot of keybinds so you can reorganize them to this custom layout.

This is my own personal custom control scheme and it’s designed to keep you from having to jump around your keyboard a ton, it’s a cozy WASD layout for the most important things. Just don’t forget you can assign units to 1-0 keys by highlighting the units you want to assign to a squad, and hold Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2, etc…

Tip: You can create formations by slecting units or a squad and holding Left + Right Mouse click and dragging in directions, let go once you’re ready and they will mostly move into formation, you may have to do it a couple times to get them to line up better since there is unit collision with most vehicles. The more you drag the wider the formation, the less you drag the smaller the formation.

Guard stance is the most common stance, it defaults for a reason. Your units will attack anything that comes into line of sight, chase them slightly, and then return to position. If on aggressive stance your units will follow enemies relentlessly once aggro’d which can be disastrous if you aren’t paying attention (They can kite/bait you back to base/reinforcements). Hold stance is great for anti air units or long range tanks where you single or small formation place them in strategic spots and don’t want them to move, but will shoot enemies that come into line of sight.

Use planning mode to create patrol routes, using my keybinds, press V to engage planning mode with the selected squad/unit, create the patrol route and make sure you connect it back to the starting point. Press V to exit planning mode when you’re done, and the unit will start pathing the route.

Assigned Squad tips: #1 for Infantry, Rush Squad, or Defense Squad, #2 for Defense Squad, #3 for Mixed Unit Attack Squad (Medium Speeds), #4 for Armor Attack Squad (Slow Armor/Tank Speed), #5 for Elite unit, #6-7-8-9 for specialized Air Squads and #0 for Harvesters.

Left Control does a force attack, so anything damaged that you can’t sell or anything getting in the way you can usually destroy it.

Left Alt is waypoint mode, use it to queue up multiple commands for moving around tiberium fields, sneaking around, or flight paths. Remember you can queue up actions also, for example you can tell an infantry unit or engineer to take a certain path and then garrison a building or an engineer to take over something.

If you hold left shift and then left click/drag click you can add/remove units to your currently selected units, left shift + double click to add all of that type of unit currently ON SCREEN. If you don’t hold left shift you can double click to select all of a type of unit that is currently ON SCREEN. This is good for grouping up/moving/formatting different types of units en-mass and then creating a squad for them if there are a ton of different units in one general area.
