When exploring E1M3, you will come across two blueprints:

Towards the end of E1M3 after the final horde fight, you will be in a big open room with jail cells on either side. The blueprints are instructions on what doors to leave open (empty) or closed (X), pay attention to where the stairs are and make sure it correlates with the blueprint.

Once completed, this message will appear:

A portal will open in one of the jail cells, teleporting you to the secret area with the gun:
