Enshrouded – Melee Issues

Melee Issues

So I was trying to get an idea of exactly why melee feels so bad(mechanic) and learn a bit more about the mechanics behind parrying/blocking and other abilities. Here’s some of the stuff I learned. I’ll mostly be avoiding the common “stagger, can’t hit air, 2 handeds slow” stuff we all know.

  • Skill Trees

For some reason melee has to invest more to get less damage than bow or mage. Bow users have a straight +10%/+20% to all ranged damage regardless of element/shot type. Mages on the other hand have +10/20% elemental damage and deal purely elemental damage. Melee on the other hand has + 10%/20% cutting/piercing/blunt with very few weapons having 1 damage type. Most are split between 2 or 3 types and have an element.

The Sword of Radiance for example is split between cutting, blunt and piercing so you have to have all six talents to get 30% extra damage. The Lightforged Axe on the other hand is roughly 50% cutting, 50% fire so you’ll only get a fraction of the 30% bonus to it’s damage (during testing it was an 18.5% increase or 113 to 134).

This should be changed to 30% more damage for axes, swords or hammers and not the damage types. It’s also awful trying to figure out what is weak against what since most of our weapons have damage spread between 2-3 damage types and even when we hit weaknesses, our total output is lower. Even better when you see effective and resisted at the same time

  • Blocking / Parrying

Blocking and parrying feel incredibly sluggish. Basically to parry you block when the enemy’s weapon flashes. Parry power makes parries apply more stun bar damage. There is also a noticeable cooldown on raising your shield which is really odd.

Parrying is in a weird spot where you can actually miss a parry by blocking in between the weapon flash and the weapon hitting you. This makes really weird stuff happen occasionally, the main one being you parry and take full damage at the same time. This also happens every time you parry a Wyvern. The parry window needs to be extended to when the attack actually lands. It should be impossible to guard an attack/get hit because you pressed block AFTER the parry flash, but before you get hit

Our reward for parrying well is suppose to be Merciless Strike, but Merciless strike is almost always weaker than just attacking normally. After a little testing I noticed that Merciless Strike only seems to be gaining damage bonuses from strength. It does not gain: Back attack, crit damage, Breach damage or the damage from cutting/blunt/piercing as far as I could tell. A Merciless strike vs a green guy did about 1050 damage, in that same amount of time I was able to attack it 5 times for 300-500 each hit

  • Back Attack

While testing I noticed back attack seems to be calculated weird. With 65% back attack damage I was only getting around 50% more damage. I tested a few things, but it always seemed to be around 45%-50% extra damage instead of the 65% shown. Critical back attacks are even worse and only deal about 31% more damage than a critical front attack. Not really sure why. I tested multiple theories, but nothing really matched well enough. It’s pretty significant though.

Anyway, these are what I’ve found so far while playing around with different skills and set ups.

Note: If you’re looking for epic and legendary gear / weapons, then you definitely need to know where you can find gold chests in Enshrouded. Our guide will help you not only find them, but also find out what you can get!
