Eternal Return – Tips and Tricks for New Players

Although I’m not the most competitive of players, I did sink about 1k hours so far in this game and I just wanted to share some tips and tricks for new’ish’ players who have just started this game. Hopefully this can be helpful and make the game more enjoyable.

Newbies Tips

This post is for players who have a general idea of how the game flows, but don’t have a clear idea on what actually to do

  1. Finishing your starting gear is your first priority

Ideally you want to finish your starting gear by the First Night, and at most before the Second Day. Just like any Hero Brawler people are going to exploit your every mistake and weakness, and having your gear not finished is a big sign that you aren’t ready to fight. When you are trying out a new build test it out in practice mode or in an AI match and see how fast you can finish your build without anyone interrupting you.

If you feel like you’re too slow at picking up items in crates, I’d recommend using the Auto-Pick up function in the options menu. This can help out tremendously and makes farming for ingredients less tedious. Another small trick you can use to speed up your building process is to just press build whenever you click on a crate; it might not seem like much, but trust me, they add up. If your build requires leather and you need to hunt animals, try to go for something that won’t take too long such as chickens, bats, or even boars (they get a massive defense debuff if they miss their charge attack).

If you can’t find certain ingredients and you feel like you are dragging on at a certain area, I personally will suggest to just move on to the next area and find it later in another area. If you can’t find it in another area you might want to consider just buying it so you can start hunting animals to earn back your credit points. Also, don’t be afraid to ask teammates if you feel behind, they are more than willing to help you out.

  1. Upgrade your Tactical Skill to Level 2

Tactical skills are still usable at Level 1, but have significantly less effectiveness and a much longer cooldown. Unless you have a special strategy to save up your credit points and buy a rare ingredient in the early game to snowball, upgrading your Tactical skill to Level 2 whenever you have enough credit points will most likely be the better idea.

  1. Group Up

After you finished building your starting gear, group up. There is strength in numbers, and you can use this as an advantage in the early game when players tend to move around solo. It doesn’t matter how OP your character might be in the early game, walking around solo and refusing to group up will more likely drag you and your teammates down. Unless you have a friend that you are chatting with in real time and can coordinate your movements precisely, grouping up will always be better.

Also, this is something a lot of new players don’t know, but when you are using the teleport pad, you can teleport directly to your teammates instead of randomly arriving in an area. Just select your teammate’s portrait when you’re using the teleport pad. However, be careful when your team is attempting to teleport to a new area together. When you select the player portrait you will teleport to the teammate’s current location at the moment. Lastly, you might want to check if it is safe to teleport to your teammate to avoid team wipes. If you Press F2 or F3, you can see your teammate with ease.

  1. Contest Major Objectives

In the early game when revives are still free, you really don’t have much to lose contesting a major objective (unless of course if your team wipes). Getting a rare ingredient will put you in a big advantage, and even if you fail at securing the objective, fighting other teams will still reward you with precious Weapon Mastery points. Fighting other players reward you with the most EXP, so playing too safe can actually put you in a disadvantage late game. Just be aware when to fall back, because major objectives will always be popular, especially the more higher rank you become. My general rule is whenever you see a second enemy team, you retreat.

If the objective seems contested by way too many teams, going for a less popular objectives such as the large animal camps in the Archery Range or Factory can be a good idea. After all there is a small chance for those large camps to drop rare ingredients, and who knows? Your opponents might get behind simply entrenching themselves and not actually fighting.

  1. Always use your Credits

Unless you are playing a pure support character (such as Johan or Leni), you always want to use your credit points to upgrade your gear. Some characters have legendary gear that are quite essential to their character, and some just to increase a few more stats. Either way every small advantage adds up and might be the deciding factor in a team fight.

The only time I would start saving up credit points is after the Third day, when free revives have been disabled. At this point even if you aren’t a pure support, I would recommend saving around 200 credit points just in case one of your teammates get killed. Rare ingredients get more abundant in the late game, so it isn’t too much of a disadvantage at this point.

  1. Vision is the most valuable resource

Always pick up Cameras and turn on surveillance consoles. Getting ambushed in this game is probably the fastest way the game can go south. No matter how strong your team might be, a good pick off or a wombo combo can easily turn the tide, so always keep a handful of cameras or scout drones in your inventory. If you don’t have any cameras and there’s a suspicious bush, at least shoot a projectile to see if it is clear or not.

If your team has good pokers such as Adriana, Haze, Hyejin, Sissela, Tia, etc. having good vision can basically win a fight before it even starts. Vision is basically a power multiplier for poke comps.

Lastly, vision can also be the deciding factor of your survival when a third party joins in a team fight. Having information a split second faster than your opponent can save your team, while dooming the other.

  1. Remember to Eat

If you play a Tank or a Bruiser, or any character that fights over a long period of time, always eat when an engagement starts. Even eating the simple basic Bread gives you 300 more HP in a fight if you survive more than 18 seconds. That is like 1/6 to 1/8 more health depending on who you play.

Obviously whenever there’s a fight you want to eat better food, because high grade food will do nothing for you if you die. Genuinely you want to keep at least two batches of food in your inventory; one high grade that you will use in team fights, one lower grade so you can heal up the damage after fighting animal camps.

  1. Decide your Game Plan at the Third Day

The Third Day is a major point of the game where you decide how you will approach the rest of the game. You should genuinely have an idea where your team is at after contesting several objectives.

If you feel like you’re ahead, or if your team has strong skirmishers, it is hunting time. Try to hunt down late game team comps such as teams who have high scaling auto attackers such as Assault Rifle Ayas, Rios, or William. You have the upper hand early game, but they can quietly scale up and screw you up late game. These teams would mostly go for the Purple Supply Crates because it is more safer than contesting mid to late game objectives. Of course, be careful not to go too aggressive. No matter how ahead you are, fighting two teams in a row will be challenging at best.

If you feel like you’re behind, but have good scaling characters, it is time to muster up all the resources and go for stray animal camps. You have to be careful and patient. Always be aware of your surroundings. As I said earlier, rare ingredients become more abundant late game, so don’t give up. Always look for an opportunity to win.

  1. Don’t be discouraged if you didn’t win. Have fun.

Unlike other Hero brawlers such as LoL, or Dota, where you simply have two teams fighting for the win in each game, since ER is a Battle Royal there can only be one winner per game. This means it will be pretty tough to actually get a win, and this can be frustrating. However always remember that even very skilled and high ranking players also have a hard time winning, despite their knowledge and skills. ER is all about adapting and trying to make the most of it, which makes a victory all the more sweeter.

Well, that is all I have to share. If you are a newcomer to ER, I hope this helped you out a bit. Happy murdering your opponents and surviving the fight.
