Some talents can be equipped to multiple combat roles while others are unique. Rifleman’s move faster trait for example can go on anything but grenadier and machinegunner.

Additionally roles give a set of stats as they rank up, separate from the stat points you get for levelling a soldier. So part of getting the stats you want is having the right mix of roles.

All passives are interchangeable if not unique to a role while attribute points cant go beyond 10, worth to keep in mind.

Bonus tip

I usually save some people with role points if something bad happens like my workers or engineers get wounded by an event. I assume its also to fill roles left by soldiers who die (or wounded/hungry/starving) but because the game is insanely easy nobody dies in combat. Each area needs more combat so you get more attrition from having to use your lower level soldiers.
