METAL GEAR & METAL GEAR 2: Solid Snake – How to Save

A guide on how to save in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

In Metal Gear, elevators work as checkpoint. When you enter an elevator room, your game will create a checkpoint. If you die after that, you will respawn in the place where you entered the elevator.

Then In the pause menu of the game you have the “Data Save” options. By selecting this option, you will be able to save the checkpoint, this means if you save, then when you close the game and start again, you can continue from your last checkpoint.

Warning: Try to save often, you don’t want to accidentally lose a lot of progress for not saving. This actually happened to me, the automatic checkpoint was created when I first entered an elevator and I spent about 1 hour without going inside an elevator again, then I save before to go to sleep, and when I came back next day, I had to start again from the elevator, and lost that 1 hours of progress.

There is a few parts in game, where a new checkpoint will automatically be created, for example When you enter the dark tunnels in the basement of Building #1 where you need to use the flashlight, I do not know if manually saving from the pause menu in these situation, will save from the last elevator or the automatically created checkpoint, so be careful with that.

At the moment of writing I have barely played MG2: SS for 1 hour, so as far as I know this information is correct, but please comment if I am wrong.

In MG2: SS something similar happens. When you step out of an elevator the checkpoint is created, and then when you do a “Data Save” from the menu, a save will be created using that checkpoint generated when you exit the elevator.

If you want to enter and exit an elevator to then save right away, keep in mind that unlike in MG, here that won’t work. For the checkpoint to be created when you exit the elevator, you need to: Go inside the elevator, go to another floor, exit the elevator, re-enter the elevator, go back to the floor where you want to save, exit the elevator, and then do your manual save in the pause menu. (I have not tried to just travel in the elevator without exiting, maybe just using the elevator is enough to create a new checkpoint when you get down).

  1. Metal gear 1: I saved the progress again when I returned to the elevator (data and hours changed!), but it loaded the previous first save. Maybe overwrite the last save doesn’t works.
I tryed to use a new save slot and it works… and I tryed some other options. It simply seems to lost some save randomly

    • There could be that there is a random bug maybe? I saved as described in the guide, several time, and it worked perfectly for me. Sorry to hear about your lose.
