Starship Troopers: Extermination – How to Survive Veteran Hive Hunt

I made this guide to simplify and explain what you should do, should be doing, and should have done in order to survive and extract in Hive Hunt on Veteran Difficulty.

Classes

Classes You Should Be Choosing

You should always have at least two healers. Having two people as the operator class should help to be able to offset using your main healing drone ability. Make sure to communicate if you can that one of the drones is on cool-down so one of your teammates (or you) don’t drive head first into a massive horde spawn in hopes of being able to plant the nuke on a nest. You have enough time to reach all of them; there’s no need to rush.

The other two classes are up to you and your team. I would recommend one bastion and one hunter.

Although you don’t much use out of the jet pack ability of the hunter in the tight corridors of most of the tunnels, once it opens up into the large rooms it can be of tremendous use. If the whole team is being swarmed and got down a hunter can boost to a vantage point to give enough time for the team to re-spawn.

You definitely need at least one Bastion class. When the tank pops his walls up and goes stationary, all the bugs will try to destroy the walls and kill him so this is a great time to throw grenades to take out the lot or at least weakens the tigers and knights.

Items to Bring

Grenades

I have found that the fire grenades are the best. They cover a large area and kill the drones almost instantly. It also seems that the tick damage of the fire can stun the larger bugs at times. The only downside is that sometimes the fire will block your vision so be cautious of where you through them.

Do not bring any gas grenades. They are trash. Just take my word for it.

Regular grenades or impacts are fine too if you can’t use or don’t have the napalm grenades.

Ammo Fabricator

At least one person needs to have one of these utilities equipped. You will run out of ammo at some points, especially the hard choke points before you can get to another spawn point. Just ping the ammo if you put it down or use your mic so someone doesn’t wander off and end up getting killed because they had no ammo.

Beacons

Heal beacons are good so the healers don’t have to waste their drones.

Scan beacons are also really good, especially when a lot of grenades or other explosives are going off so you can still see what you’re shooting at.

Things to Look Out for

Light Beacons

Someone needs to grab these at the beginning. They serve as a guide marker so you don’t get turned around or if you’re re-spawning you know the direction of either your current target or where you have already been. These are especially useful towards the end when your re-spawn point might get destroyed and you spawn a ways back but need to get to your team quickly.

Shocks

These are a lifesaver when you find them. Someone can also bring them in from the beginning which I would recommend. Set them up at large room entrances to create a stun choke point. This way you have an area to fall back to if stuff hits the fan. Don’t be afraid to fall back and take out the majority of the horde. They will keep re-spawning but it will be less than the original spawn and as long as one of you is alive, your team can come back.

Guns

There are different types of gun in the chests around the map. Sometimes you get lucky and can get a rocket launcher or something else to deal with the large hordes or the harder bugs. Just remember that there is friendly fire damage.

Communications

Ping

Ping everything. If you see a spawn point, ping it. If you see a mortar bug, ping it. Anything that could be helpful for your teammates to know, ping it.

Talk

If you have a mic, use it. If you can talk, it helps a lot especially towards to end of the hive hunt. Sometimes it’s better to have someone stay behind and sacrifice themselves to keep the bugs occupied while at least one person makes it to the extract. You don’t want a teammate trying to come back to revive you and then the mission ends in a defeat. Communication is key. This is a team game.

Extracting

Tac Map

Use your tac map to find where the ship is going to be. It’s very easy to get turned around and end up going the wrong way for too long and not end up making it to the extract.

Map Knowledge

After you’ve played each map a few times, you should know the way to get to the extract when it shows up. Let your teammates know. The more that get out, the more exp you get.
