The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Easy Controller Support for Oblivion

Ugh it would be simpler and far more beneficial to just learn to use Mouse & Keyboard. But by all means knock yourself out.

Step by Step Guide

Сrеdit gоеs to Drunkenstein !

  • Step 1 Open your Steam client.
  • Step 2 Open the Store of your Steam client
  • Step 3 Type in the search tab “Controller companion” and click the search icon
  • Step 4 Buy Controller companion – it is super expensive it will cost you whole 3$, but it will be worth it.
  • Step 5 Use your Steam client to install Controller companion
  • Step 6 Plug in your controller
  • Step 7 Launch Controller companion using your Steam client or using Controller companion’s shortcut
  • Step 8 Nothing happens? Fear not it’s normal. Click on your “hidden icons” in the bottom-right corner and you will find one that looks like a gamepad among others. Right click it and select “Settings”
  • Step 9 Controller companion should open and now select “Profiles” on it.
  • Step 10 Now click “Edit bindings”
  • Step 11 Now you can map your controller keys to correspond to the ones on your Mouse & Keyboard by clicking them then selecting what they are suppose to act as on your M&K
  • Step 11.5 You can also do secondary bindings which will work by holding your “Back/Select” key and pressing the key with the secondary binding on your controller during gameplay. So it’s best to use controls that are rarely used as secondary like “Caps Lock” which by default is used to toggle between running and walking.
  • Step 12 Launch Oblivion using your Steam client. This may cause Controller companion to stop working due to conflict. Don’t fret just hold “Back/Select” and press “Start” on your controller, which will make it work again.
  • Step 13 Be happy with your newfound controller support
  • Step 14 Thank me

FAQ’s

Q: Does it work for non-Steam games

A: Yes, in fact games that are not on steam will not conflict with it.

Q: I have been *** about controller support for years now and the solution was right under my nose, am I really that stupid?

A: You are unable to learn to use M&K and are reading this, so what do you think?

Q: I changed the default controls layout in Oblivion and now my controller keys are mixed up or not working

A: You don’t say? It’s probably an act of god…… Just reset to defaults or change the keybinds again.

  1. This setup ‘works’ but never ends up with the correct feel to emulate Xbox 360 controller support. If you are against mods, then this is the best route by far though.

If you do support using mods, check out NorthernUI and the NothernUI hotkey wheel mods. There are a few other perquisites, but they enable native controller support just as back on the xbox 360.

NothernUI has a ‘stock’ xbox alternate download as well.

Be aware, the native controller support through NothernUI will grab the ‘first’ controller detected. I use a Razer Huntsman V2 keyboard and this caused the controller to not work correctly.
