The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu – Essential Survival Tips

Essential Survival Tips

The game rewards stealth and teamwork far more than direct combat. Treat every expedition as a stealth mission first and only fight when necessary.

Do not stay in the jungle longer than needed. If the forest begins to awaken or the timer expires, start heading back immediately. Remaining too long causes increasingly dangerous enemies to spawn continuously.

The extraction progress bar shows only the minimum payout. Your actual rewards are often around 50% higher, and successful extraction is still possible even if the bar is not completely filled.

Set a clear objective before entering the jungle. If you find valuable rewards such as a logbook, survivor, or special artifact, consider extracting immediately instead of risking everything for the contract.

Managing Forest Aggression

Avoid awakening the forest whenever possible.

Actions that increase forest aggression include:

  • Frequent firearm use.
  • Making excessive noise.
  • Breaking branches.
  • Sprinting continuously while wearing heavy armor.
  • Repeatedly using the Medallion.
  • Blowing the horn unless absolutely necessary.

Use firearms only against dangerous enemies or emergencies. Silent kills are much safer.

Treasure Hunting

Purchase the treasure-finding artifact from the shop as early as possible. It greatly speeds up treasure hunting.

Treasure is usually located away from the main path. First locate the primary trail, then search along both sides.

Blue-green candles are the main indicator that treasure or an idol site is nearby.

If your inventory is full, leave unnecessary items on the main path and collect them later with the cart.

Combat Tips

Avoid fighting enemies head-on whenever possible.

The safest strategy is to let one player attract enemy attention while another performs a backstab for an instant kill.

Backstabs instantly kill most standard enemies regardless of weapon, including the starting knife.

Headshots are extremely effective:

  • Bows can kill most humanoids with a single headshot.
  • Prioritize headshots and backstabs to preserve weapon durability.

Many enemies can dodge both melee and ranged attacks, so avoid assuming every attack will land.

Enemies can also use their own equipment, including:

  • Muskets
  • Throwing axes
  • Lanterns

Be prepared for ranged attacks.

Weapon Tips

Different weapons have unique mechanics.

  • Spear and Francesca Axe can be thrown for silent ranged kills.
  • Polehammer cannot be thrown and instead performs a powerful heavy strike.
  • Many melee weapons have alternate attack patterns.
  • Practice with weapons before leaving camp to avoid accidental throws.

Useful melee mechanics:

  • Dash attacks usually stun enemies.
  • Heavy attacks often provide strong stagger effects.
  • Polehammer bashes can interrupt pouncing enemies if timed correctly.

The Axe is considered one of the strongest weapons thanks to its ability to be thrown and easily recovered.

Avoid fighting unarmed whenever possible.

Using Fire

Lanterns are both light sources and powerful throwable fire weapons.

Thrown lanterns deal area damage and are especially effective against groups of enemies and Creeping Canopy creatures.

Torches can force vines to retreat when they attempt to revive fallen enemies.

Teamwork

Stay together whenever possible.

Being close to teammates:

  • Slows sanity loss.
  • Reduces the chance of certain enemies targeting isolated players.
  • Makes backstabs much easier.

A good team composition is:

  • One frontline player to hold enemy attention.
  • One ranged player supporting from behind.

If separated, establish a quick identification method before shooting. Hallucinations can make friends appear as enemies.

If playing solo with an AI companion, lure enemies toward the companion, then perform a backstab while the enemy is distracted.

A teammate carrying a Crucifix can reduce aggression and attract enemy attention, creating easy backstab opportunities.

Dealing with Pouncing Enemies

Most charging enemies attempt to grab you.

Instead of retreating straight backward:

  • Sprint sideways to avoid the grab.
  • Time a melee bash just before they leap to knock them down.

Running past a teammate also allows them to kill the attacker from behind.

Sanity Management

Low sanity is often more dangerous than enemies.

Warning signs include:

  • Ominous music.
  • Muffled hearing.
  • Greying screen.
  • Hallucinations.

Restore or preserve sanity by:

  • Staying near teammates.
  • Standing close to the cart.
  • Eating glowing blue mushrooms.

Avoid:

  • Whispering statues.
  • Large idols.
  • Remaining near madness shrines.
  • Looking at disturbing structures for long periods.

Low sanity can cause hallucinations including:

  • Fake loot.
  • Friends appearing as enemies.
  • Enemies disguised as teammates.
  • Hallucinations such as vomiting centipedes.

Always verify unusual sights with teammates before reacting.

Dangerous Events

Red events are among the most dangerous situations.

Before one begins:

  • Pick up extra weapons if available.
  • Carry an additional lantern.
  • Avoid spending time reloading.
  • Focus on backstabs whenever possible.

Red or purple moons generally indicate extremely dangerous conditions.

Wildlife

Deer are valuable.

Benefits include:

  • Extra money.
  • Permanent progression through improved ship rations.

Carrying a dead deer does not anger the forest.

However:

  • Injured animals make noise.
  • Killing them with firearms creates additional noise.

Birds

If you spot or hear a black raven, eliminate it quickly.

Allowing it to attack creates a smoke cloud that rapidly increases insanity and escalates nearby threats.

Escape Tips

Once the mission timer expires, dangerous enemies begin spawning continuously.

Whenever possible:

  • Return to the rowboat before recalling the cart.
  • Follow the salt trail back to the starting area.

Calling the cart early causes additional rushing enemies to appear.

You do not need to wait for the cart to escape.

However:

  • Every living teammate must reach extraction.
  • The starting area is generally safe, although Faceless copies may still appear.

If someone is captured, waiting at the rowboat is often safer than attempting a risky rescue.

Finding Your Way

If lost:

  • Call the cart.
  • Hold the interaction key on the cart driver to return home.

The horn can also summon the cart, but it creates significant noise and should only be used when necessary.

The ship’s horn heard in the distance is only a hallucination and has no gameplay effect.

Helpful Items

The Medallion helps locate objectives but attracts danger if used repeatedly. Use it sparingly.

The treasure-finding artifact is one of the best early purchases for efficient treasure hunting.

Progression Tips

Saving survivors unlocks permanent camp upgrades.

One rescued woodworker can upgrade the cart with active and passive blessings.

Completing the contract is not mandatory.

Even if the contract fails, valuable discoveries such as:

  • Logbooks
  • Special artifacts
  • Survivors

are often worth extracting immediately, as they still provide meaningful long-term progression.
