Dead Island 2 – Guide to Disable TAA / Film Grain

A tutorial explaining how to quickly turn off TAA and Film Grain as the game’s graphics settings do not allow you to do so.

Temporal Anti Aliasing and Film Grain Disabling Guide

Foreword

As the title suggests, I’ll assist you with disabling Film Grain and TAA as this game features both, and neither of them looks nice. Strangely, TAA looks fantastic in 4K yet, in practically every game, degrades to a fuzzy mess at 1440p and 1080p, the resolutions that the majority of players use. On the other hand, film grain is a matter of taste, and I personally think it looks terrible.

Disabling TAA and Film Grain

Anyway, you will want to find the Engine.ini file for the game. The file is located in:

  • C/Users/”Usernamefolder”/AppData/Local/DeadIsland/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor

The file might be called “Engine” or “Engine.ini”.

Open it with Notepad.

For TAA removal go to the very end of the file and add in the following text:

[SystemSettings]
r.DefaultFeature.AntiAliasing=0

For Film Grain removal go to the very end of the file and add in the following text:

[SystemSettings]
r.SSR.MaxRoughness=0
r.ToneMapper.GrainQuantization=0
r.ToneMapper.Quality=0
r.SceneColorFringe.Max=0
r.SceneColorFringeQuality=0

If you are doing both TAA removal and Film Grain removal then you only need one [SystemSettings] text above all the “r.” text

After you’re done, save the file, in some cases for the film grain to 100% disappear you may need to set the Engine.ini file to “read only”. You can do this by right clicking the file, selecting properties, and under general select the box that says read only and then click OK.

Conclusion

If you decide to remove TAA, then your background image on the main menu screen where you continue your game, look at options, extras, etc. will be blacked out with the original background image only on the character’s clothes. This seems to be perfectly normal and doesn’t change usability of the main menu screen.

Also, after you remove TAA you will be left with an aliased image which means you’ll see jagged lines everywhere you look in the game. If this bothers you, you can look into downloading ReShade and messing with the Anti Aliasing options available there.
