Imperator: Rome – Dictatorship Guide (How to Become a Dictator)

This is a handy guide on destroying the democratic process in your country forever.

Introduction

All credit goes to Transatlantic Slave Trade!

So you have a ruler in power and you really like him. So much in fact you think he should be the ruler forever. Well luckily for you, you can achieve that. Nevermind the bodies that will pile up on your road to greatness.

Things you need to have to proclaim a permanent dictatorship:

  • Over 40 stability (this will be important as you’ll take a -15 stability hit if you pass the electoral reform law).
  • A ruler with over 80 popularity.
  • Over 20 tyranny.
  • At least 80 seats in the senate are Populist.
  • Have passed the Lifetime Elections law (fourth reform).

Becoming Dictator

Things you need to have to proclaim a permanent dictatorship:

  • Over 40 stability (this will be important as you’ll take a -15 stability hit if you pass the electoral reform law).
  • A ruler with over 80 popularity.
  • Over 20 tyranny.
  • At least 80 seats in the senate are Populist.
  • Have passed the Lifetime Elections law (fourth reform).

Requirement 1: Have over 40 stability

If you want to become dictator as quickly as possible after passing the Lifetime Elections law, get your stability to 55 before passing the reform. This is pretty easily done by just performing a sacrifice to the gods and waiting a bit.

Requirement 2: Have over 80 popularity

See requirement 4.

Alternatively, if the character you want to become dictator isn’t your ruler yet, make them into a general or admiral. Winning battles increases popularity by a lot, and afterwards you can hold a Triumph for them to increase their popularity further. Once they are a ruler, you can increase their popularity further by Hosting Games. This is a character interaction you can find by just clicking on your ruler.

Requirement 3: Have over 20 tyranny

See next requirement, because you’ll accrue a lot of tyranny getting the populists in majority.

Requirement 4: At least 80 seats in the senate are Populist

This one is actually surprisingly easy to do. Don’t press the boost faction influence button in the government screen as not only will that decrease your stability, it will only take you up to 60 seats.

Conquer a country and take all their families as prisoners. Once they’re in your dungeons, execute them all one by one. This will raise populist support (and your popularity) immensely .

Requirement 5: Pass the Lifetime Elections reform

Quickest way to do this is right after doing requirement 4. Force people to convert or execute event more prisoners to raise your tyranny to 35-40. If your rulers corruption is high then you’ll need to raise your tyranny even further. Your lovely populist senate should approve you of changing the electoral law once they fear you enough. Your ruler MUST be in the Populist faction to achieve this step however.

If you want your dictator not to be a dirty populist, you’ll need to have passed this reform and then have them win the election once the populist who passed it dies.

Once you’ve done all that, then say goodbye to democracy! And a big hello to monarchy. Once you have over 600 territories, you can even become an Empire.
