Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition - How to Make Money (Easy Method)

In the Hordes of the Underdark campaign, specifically by Chapter 2, you can make a lot of gold by selling certain kinds of poisoned ammunition, which are easily acquirable by going to certain places as soon as the chapter starts. You'll need all the money you can come across, because the smith Rizolvir can upgrade your weapons to the point of absurdity, but he charges similarly hefty amounts of money.

Guide to Making Money

Make Tons of Money by Selling Ammo

Here's how to do it:

  1. When you arrive at Lith My'athar, find Cavallas (the boatman) and go to Shaori's Fell (a.k.a "the island with the strange town").
  2. At the beginning of the level, when you face Sabal and her drows for the first time, there's a weapon rack nearby with 99 Poison Bolts. Don't sell them yet!
  3. After that, you don't need to talk to anyone else just yet. Just go to the Castle and kill the first group of driders you find (they drop the Assanti shortbow... those ones!). Save the game before proceeding. In a nearby room there is a Drider Assassin, he drops up to 99 Poison Arrows. I say up to because he fires some of them at you, so try to kill him as quick as you can. Important: This particular drider likes to reposition around the room when you take too long to kill him, reappearing somewhere close. If you kill him right when he's in the middle of his reposition animation, the loot will be bugged out of bounds and you won't be able to get the arrows. This is why I told you to save the game right before facing him. And of course, don't sell the arrows just yet.
  4. Right before you can enter the Beholder Caves you get ambushed by Eldath Raisin. Kill the archers around him and they drop some more Poison Bolts - as many as there are left after they shoot them at you. This fight is quite hard, though, so buff yourselves to the heavens.

Now we need to actually sell the ammo. However, HotU's Chapter 2 has a sell price cap ($10,000) that prevents you from selling items for too much money. If you try to sell the ammo in a big stack (10 or above), you'll get the 10k cap. Instead, go to the city of Drearing's Deep and find the female duergar merchant nearby (as shown in this guide's picture above). She'll give you excellent prices.

Right-click the Poison Bolts and split them into groups of 8, you'll notice that each stack will be right below the price cap, which is exactly what we want! Split the Poison Arrows into groups of 2 and the same will occur. After selling everything, you should have made enough money to completely upgrade one weapon in Rizolvir (or to split the upgrades between two different weapons, if you're a dual-wielder). Here's a few hints about that:

  • Rivolzir can get your weapon up to +10 enhancement, but IIRC you won't need more than +7 to bypass every bosses' damage reduction. Similarly, the most recommended elemental upgrade is +2d6 Acid, being the overall least resisted element AND the best one against the final boss. Also keep in mind that Rivolzir can be found in Chapter 3 as well.
  • Your weapon can't have more than 8 upgrades at a time (including enhancement bonus and any innate properties), and Rivolzir will refuse to do any upgrade after you reach 8 upgrades, even if you just want to increase the weapon's enhancement bonus. There are certain items that give you more properties to your weapon, separately from Rivolzir. Those are the light gems sold by the Djinni merchant (give your weapon a 20m blue/green/red light), and the Black Pearl found in Drearing's Deep (gives your weapon On-Hit Strength drain, DC=26). You'll want to only put those in your weapon After you're done upgrading them on Rizolvir, if you're minding the "8 properties" limit.
