Half-Life: Alyx – How to Skip Jeff (Cheats)

In case you do not like / wish to play the “Jeff” chapter for any reason.

More Half-Life: Alyx Guides:

Bye Jeff!

This part of the game is difficult. I find it frustrating. The stealth mechanics are not enjoyable. I have looked up solutions, but I still cannot complete it. I have made a guide for players who wish to bypass this section.

This method allows you to bypass a section of the game. Some may consider it an exploit. This section causes me significant stress, not fear. I have attempted to play it multiple times, but it triggers an extreme negative reaction. I have a medical condition that causes me to react strongly to certain stimuli. Stealth gameplay is one of those triggers. Here is how to skip this section.

  • Leave the game and then right click the game’s icon in your library and click “properties”
  • Click “set launch options” and in the little box write “-console -vconsole” (without speechmarks. Save then run the game again.
  • Load up the game to the menu, then goto your computer screen and press the ` key (next to the 1 key on most keyboards) to bring up the “vconsole” in a separate window.
  • In the “COMMAND” box at the bottom of that type “map a4_C17_zoo” without speechmarks and enter.
  • It will then load you up into the “captivity” section which is the next chapter.

Note that you will start with all weapons you should have unlocked up to that point, but NO upgrades from resin machines you may have previously had. There is a resin machine quite nearby however, and you will discover you also start with 116 resin in your inventory.

If that isn’t enough you can try the below COMMAND that i discovered for more resin (but be warned… this is very cheaty):

  • give item_hlvr_crafting_currency_large

There we are. You might also wanna quit the game and remove those launch options in case they interfere with the achievements.

I love games and I live games. Video games are my passion, my hobby and my job. My experience with games started back in 1994 with the Metal Mutant game on ZX Spectrum computer. And since then, I’ve been playing on anything from consoles, to mobile devices. My first official job in the game industry started back in 2005, and I'm still doing what I love to do.

  1. Big thanks! Damn I hate sneaking in VR. Budget Cuts are unplayable for me.
I stopped playing Alyx over a year ago, because this level gave me the bore and just made me frustrated. Tried it out again today, last save just before opening a port with two hands, and there Jeff was. Took me 10 seconds to get bored again.
Did your trick, and saved. Got a distaste in my mouth by just seeing Chapter 7 though so didn’t feel to play HL at all after that, but next time I’m keen I’ll be starting off at Chapter 8. So thanks!

Until then, I’ll go back playing something intense the way I like it 🙂

  2. I am going to write here a even better cheat solution that I found out: vrfly_enabled 1

This is basically noclip which allows you to control character through keyboard + mouse and go through walls. After I trapped Jeff the first time, I did not wanted to release him, so I used it, flew 10m straight up to next room where the elevator should go (turned cheat off – vrfly_enabled 0) and continued as usual (except without Jeff), game did worked ok. It seems Valve has anticipated it and straight out placed the 3 energy cells next to their station (I did not have to go and collect them). Once I tried to open hatch however Jeff came to interrupt the sequence, but I only had to throw 1 bottle to the compactor and close it. Basically if you want to avoid Jeff, not lose your progress (ammo, resin) and can cope with 1 bottle throw to lure him away to compactor, this is the way.

  3. Very helpful walkthrough. One thing to note is you don’t have to grab all the resin / ammo in the rooms with the batteries while Jeff is still around. You can come back to this section after trapping / compacting him. A lot less stressful that way.

  4. I am very grateful to you Sir. I, like others had got to the stage where I was losing interest in playing anymore as I just hated the Jeff level and couldn’t get through it.
Repeatedly waiting for the level to reload knowing I was going to die does start to get the anger levels up.
    Thanks again
