Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc – Monocoins Guide

Everything you need to know about Monocoins, including where to find every hidden Monocoin.

What are Monocoins for?

Monocoins are a reward given to the player for exploring the school and completing Class Trials. Although they have no impact on the story, they can be used to collect gifts to give to the other students, which helps you unlock skills to use during Class Trials. Monocoins are also used to unlock artwork, cutscenes, and music in the Gallery. The player can hold up to 999 Monocoins at once.

There are several achievements that require you to collect Monocoins in order to complete as well. You will likely need 1300+ Monocoins in order to complete every achievement.

  • Nine Coins, Nine Purses, Nine Bears – Collected 999 Monocoins.
  • Ooh, For Me? – Collected 50 unique presents.
  • Seriously, You Shouldn’t Have – Collected every possible present.
  • Hey, Big Spender – Enjoyed the exciting excitement of the MonoMono Machine 100 times.
  • Rogue’s Gallery – Unlocked all gallery items.

Obtaining Monocoins

Monocoins can be obtained in 3 ways:

  • Exploring the school. During each chapter of the story, except for the Prologue and Epilogue, there will be 20 Monocoins hidden around the school for you to find.
  • Completing a Class Trial. After completing a Class Trial, you will receive 1 Monocoin for every 10 points you earn. You will also receive bonus Monocoins depending on your difficulty setting.
  • Completing Monokuma’s final backup in School Mode. If you successfully build Warlockuma by day 50 of School Mode, Monokuma will award you 200 Monocoins for your efforts.

Additionally, you can increase the number of Monocoins you receive by obtaining the Raise skill from Celeste. Raise will allow you to earn 3 Monocoins instead of 1 whenever you find a hidden Monocoin, as well as a 10% bonus to the number of Monocoins awarded at the end of a Class Trial. You can unlock Raise as early as Chapter 2.

It’s recommended that you not worry about Monocoins until after you’ve beaten the game. You will obtain most of the Monocoins you need by playing through Story Mode once, and then playing School Mode until you’ve unlocked every character’s unique ending. However, if you still need to collect Monocoins for achievements, the fastest way to obtain Monocoins is by replaying the Chapter 1 Class Trial on Mean/Mean difficulty and using the fast-forward feature as much as possible. This will net you 100+ Monocoins in under 10 minutes.

Hidden Monocoin Locations

In each chapter, 20 different objects around the school will contain a hidden Monocoin. The location of these Monocoins will remain the same throughout the chapter, and no new Monocoins will appear after the chapter begins. Therefore, unless you are prevented from going to certain areas by the story, all 20 Monocoins can be obtained at any time during the chapter, and there’s no need to check the same object more than once during the chapter.

Once you complete the Investigation phase, you will be summoned to the Class Trial by Monokuma. You won’t be able to collect hidden Monocoins after that point, so be sure to check every hidden Monocoin location before gathering all of the evidence.

With a few exceptions noted at the start of each chapter, you can obtain every hidden Monocoin during the Investigation phase, so feel free to progress through the game however you’d like until then. The Monocoins are listed in the order that they first become accessible, so you can follow along with the list as you play.

If a Monocoin becomes unobtainable before reaching the Investigation phase, your last opportunity to collect it will be listed below with a spoiler tag. If you don’t want to miss a single Monocoin but want to avoid spoilers, just collect the Monocoins as soon as they become accessible.

Achievements

Monocoins are needed in order to complete 5 achievements:

Nine Coins, Nine Purses, Nine Bears

Collected 999 Monocoins

This achievement requires you to have the maximum number of Monocoins at once. It’s recommended that you don’t spend Monocoins at the MonoMono machine or in the Gallery until you’ve collected 999.

Ooh, For Me?

Collected 50 unique presents

You’ll get this achievement naturally while working towards Seriously, You Shouldn’t Have.

Seriously, You Shouldn’t Have

Collected every possible present

This achievement requires a lot of time spent at the MonoMono machine, in addition to completing Story Mode and every character’s unique School Mode ending. Monocoins are necessary for 92 of the 114 presents, which are obtained at random, and 1 of those 92 presents isn’t obtainable until after you’ve completed Story Mode. It’s recommended that you don’t try to collect all of the presents until after completing Story Mode. Additionally, it’s best to spend your Monocoins 1 at a time. It may be more time-consuming, but it drastically reduces the number of Monocoins you need to spend, and therefore collect, overall.

Hey, Big Spender

Enjoyed the exciting excitement of the MonoMono Machine 100 times

You’ll get this achievement naturally while working towards Seriously, You Shouldn’t Have.

Rogue’s Gallery

Unlocked all gallery items

You will need 941 Monocoins to unlock every item in the Gallery.

  1. This was the only guide I found so far that explicitly tells you that you need 999 monocoins at once for the achievement, WITHOUT spending them. Unfortunately I read this too late, back to grinding I go then…

  2. Thank you. Yeah i ended up finding it by accident and i was like “Oh wait he missed this one”. Then only later i realized.
