Age of Wonders III – Goblin Archdruid Build Guide

Guide to Goblin Archdruid Build

Goblin Archdruid is a fun combo. I have one with Destruction mastery that turns whole maps into blighted swamps. But it’s not a particularly easy or strong combo (NB: the destruction version is not better than the earth magic one).

Archdruid is a strong early-game class, and Goblin doubles down on that with cheap units and fast city growth. Unfortunately, you also double down on poison damage (which many enemies resist, like undead) and you don’t have strong end-game stuff.

Anyway, the way to deal with dragon and archon armies in general is to make sure they do not spawn. They start spawning around turn 20-30, so destroy the spawn sites before that. If you encounter them later on, trolls and earth elementals both work very well, and queen spiders or tier 4 serpents can also fight them off.

If you’re still using tier 1 snakes and spiders by the time armies of bone dragons are wandering the map, you’re probably in trouble. Try levelling up your units much earlier (Not easy as the tier 1 versions of these units die quickly, but perfectly doable with a little practice. You do need to fight a lot of battles and fight them manually. But then that is always a good idea.).

In the late game I do not bother trying to summon tier 1 snakes/spiders, as it becomes too much of a pain to level them. You can summon tier 3-4 versions with the later druid summoning spells.

So some tips to sum up:

  • Expand fast and level your units, aggressively using Befriend Animal and lesser animal summoning to get some tier 3 units ASAP.
  • Get some healing skills on your heroes to help level your units and keep them alive.
  • Web ability from baby spiders is your friend.
  • In the late game, rely on tier 3-4 animals, trolls, and in your case earth elementals for your front line.
  • To fight stuff like late-game warlords and dreadnoughts, you probably need to have outgrown them in the early game so you can win with numbers.
  • It helps to have a spell against machines/undead. Rot (water) and Wreck (destruction) come to mind. Rot is much easier to get.

I hope that gives you some ideas!
