Against the Storm – New Hearths Explained

Why Are You Need More New Hearths

All credit goes to IamMokume!

I strive to build a hearth for every 8 citizens. In practice for me this usually comes down to the following:

In my starting glade, i build probably 15 housing. When i am at say 13-14 pop and know the next delivery will get me to 16, i’ll be trying working on that next hearth with 8 housing. (usually 3 simple houses, sometimes 2 simple and 1 advanced, rarely 4 advanced). I hope to have it done by the time i get those new citizens and get to 16. I then evict people from the starting glade and move them to the other hearth so i have a second encampment right when the 16th citizen arrives. Repeat for when the 24th citizen is expected.

Now i won’t always succeed in doing it this perfect, sometimes, theres just too much other stuff that needs to be done and the hearth is delayed. But i surely try to get it done. It is also often of great importance to get it done before the next storm comes. Those -30 hostility and +2 global resolve are just huge.

A 4th hearth (32 citizens) i only build rarely. I don’t often have the fire essences or whats their name for that. I dont always have the space for it. (opening 2 dangerous glades is my default, so thats 1 hearth in each) And of course by that time we are finding ourselves in end game and victory is probably in sight even without it.

Besides that, it is important to have a hearth near your workplaces. (just like that small warehouse) So thats another reason to build them in each glade you utilize.

Both of the above mentioned reasons are more than enough by themselves to want to build a hearth in each glade. There is no “probably worth it”. Its like tree times over worth it without sacrificing.

I very, very rarely sacrifice at all. If i do, its probably intermittently like 10s on, 20s off, (resolve goes up faster than it goes down) when there is a real and temporary emergency that can be solved with a manageble amount of sacrificing. Sacrificing can only be done at the main hearth, but it can take up to 3 stacks of each resource.

Fuel is indeed a factor. You want to get a (upgraded) coal mine, marrow source, or oil production for fuel. If you have to make do with wood or even a killn (which is barely any better than just burning the wood), that could be a motive to forego the third hearth. Depends though. If important work is being done in the glade, you still want that hearth. If there is no very important work being done there, or you really cant afford the fuel, you can also built the hearths, and only fuel them when really needed (during storm)

One thing is for sure, keeping extra hearths burning is A LOT better use of your fuel than sacrificing.

Because every worker needs to take their break at a hearth, the more time they spend walking there and back again, the less productive they are. Building extra hearths close to fixed production spots such as mines or restored ruins reduces wasted travel time. Pairing it with a small warehouse opens up new prime real estate for production buildings that need to be close to storage (i.e. all of them).

I’m not as meticulous but I nearly always have a second hearth functioning, and sometimes a third, especially if I have the Safe Haven cornerstone (-40 Hostility for every Level 2 Hearth). Definitely keep fuel supplies in mind; you can stop burning at small hearths whenever you want, but any houses nearby will become nonfunctional until you relight it.
