  • Select Your Mods: Click on the mod you wish to download. Most modding platforms provide a detailed description, user ratings, and comments to help you make an informed decision.
  • Download: Typically there will be a “Download” button or link. Ensure you’ve downloaded the mods you want.

Installing Mods

  • Check Prerequisites: At the moment mods only work with the BepInEx framework. So before proceeding, ensure you have BepInEx 6 installed. You can download it from the official BepInEx GitHub or your preferred Modding Platform. Follow their installation instructions to set up BepInEx correctly. (Basically you just have to move the content of the BepInEx folder into the main Cities Skylines II directory and run the game once.)
  • Locate Your Cities: Skylines 2 Directory: Open your file explorer and navigate to your Cities: Skylines 2 installation directory. Typically, this is located in something like “…SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Cities Skylines II”
  • Access BepInEx Directory: Within the Cities: Skylines 2 directory, locate the “BepInEx” folder. This is basically where you’ll place your mods.
  • Install Your Mods: Once you’ve downloaded the mods, they will usually come in a folder format. Place the entire mod folder (containing the mod files) into the “…\Cities Skylines II\BepInEx\plugins” directory.
  • Check Compatibility: Some mods may require specific versions of Cities: Skylines 2 or other dependencies. Always refer to the mod’s description for compatibility information.
  • Start the Game: With the mods installed, launch Cities: Skylines 2. BepInEx will load the mods during startup.
  • Manage Mods: You can check the mod logs in the BepInEx Console. You can enable it in the config if it isn’t already.

It will look something like this while you are in-game:

Conclusion

Even if there aren’t alot of mods as of now – by following these steps, you’ll be able to easily find, download, and install mods for Cities: Skylines 2. Modding can add a whole new dimension to your gameplay, allowing you to customize and enhance your city-building experience.

Since ColossalStudio haven’t released the official modding tools or platform yet, this guide only covered mods running with BepInEx.

  1. Where is the Mod WORKSHOP??? CITIES 1 has a workshop within Steam to download directly and play MODS. N
Now we have to manually download and install with additional steps to use any mods? Why?!

    • Mods are coming, they just arent officially out yet. Also it wont be on steam workshop, they are developing their own website which they say will have all the features of the steam workshop + more. (The website will auto download mods just like the steam workshop)

  2. Even with a mod folder in the plugins folder I’m seeing “0 plugins to load” in the bepinex console. I’ve tried with v5 and v6

    • When you can see the BepInEx console then BepInEx is not the reason since it’s getting loaded. Be careful what version (5/6) you use, most of them use 6 but it’s usually written in the mod description. Maybe delete BepInEx & all mods from the CS2 directory and do it all over.

  3. Its unzipping, copy and pasting a folder. start game, thats the extent of diffeculty of installing BepInEx.

Then place mods unzipped in gamefolder/BepInEx/plugins

I tried BepInEx 5, so does 6 work as well?

    • This is currently the only way to mod it. It might take 5 minutes to setup but after that u just have to put your new mods into the plugins folder.
With ColossalStudio releasing the official tools it will be easier though.
