How to Manage Mood
Managing food, energy, sleeping conditions, and stress is essential for maintaining your settlers’ mood. Food is the most versatile way to raise mood, but several other sources can provide additional mood or energy bonuses.
Food
Manage food distribution through the top right UI. Grilled food raises mood more than ungrilled food.
Food Sources
| Food | Source | Effects |
|---|---|---|
| Luma fruits and berries | Trees and berry bushes | Food source |
| Meat and monster meat | Defeating mobs | Provides a large mood buff when grilled |
| Turnips | Floor 2 and below | Provides a large mood buff when grilled |
| Oats | Can be grown; available from floor 3 and below | Very filling with only a small mood debuff |
| Slime pudding | Defeating slimes | Does not spoil |
| Hardtack | Hiring settlers | No mood debuff for any species; very filling; used as the starting ration |
Species Food Preferences
Different species react differently to different types of food:
- Elves can eat grass porridges without a debuff, but hate all kinds of meat.
- Lizards can eat raw meat, but only grilled meat gives mood buffs. They hate vegetables.
- Humans and elves should avoid meat.
- Lizards should only eat meat.
These preferences can be managed through Top Right UI > Handling Policy.
One option is to disable mood food and manually provide mood-boosting food when needed.
Sleep and Energy
Sleeping restores energy, which is necessary for casting all kinds of skills and for staying awake in the dungeon.
Energy levels affect mood and character performance:
- More than 80% energy: Grants the Vigorous buff, which raises mood.
- Less than 20% energy: Decreases all stats and applies a mood debuff.
- Less than 0% energy: The character collapses to the ground and binge sleeps, becoming unable to wake up for a while.
Rooms and Decorations
Check the Room Type page in the top right guide when building a good-quality bedroom.
The following can affect mood:
- Campfire: Provides a mood buff.
- Flower pot: Provides a mood buff.
- Good bedroom: Provides a long mood buff while sleeping. The duration depends on the room quality.
- Sleeping on the floor: Applies a mood debuff. Sleeping bags can counter this effect.
Never sleep on the floor when it can be avoided.
Resting in the Dungeon
While inside the dungeon, if a character needs energy or mood, use a campfire with bedrolls.
If you do not have textile, build a Basic Workstation and craft bedrolls. The required resources can be gathered easily on any floor.
Stress and Despair
When a character reaches 100% stress and becomes despaired, occasional cursing can occur. This affects the mood of other characters nearby.

Additional Mood and Energy Bonuses
The following effects provide additional mood or energy regeneration:
| Item or Effect | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Someone nearby holding a torch | +1 mood |
| Hide/leather armor | +2 mood, +20% energy regeneration |
| Hide/leather helmet | +2 mood, +10% energy regeneration |
| Ash of Solace | +5 mood for 5 minutes |
| Flower necklace | +2 mood |
| Royal Jelly | +3 mood, +20% energy regeneration |
Ash of Solace is a consumable that should always be carried and used when additional mood is needed.
Royal Jelly is a consumable that provides both a mood bonus and increased energy regeneration.
