Targeting Guide
Why is my unit getting targeted and how do I stop it?
This guide should hopefully answer a lot of these questions.
Generally speaking, potentially a third of the time when someone asks for help to clear a stage in the early to midgame, a slight repositioning of units was all they needed.
Here is a short list of the more common examples of targets systems used:
- Highest Attack (the most common)
- Highest HP
- Highest speed
- Lowest HP
- Front and mid row (Zhao Yun, Sima Yi)
- Mid and back row (Tamamo, Akechi)
- Mirror(prioritize unit in same position)
- Completely random: rare but dangerous
In many cases, if you manipulate your teams positions before the battle, you can avoid being hit by game deciding skills. A good enemy example of this would be Tamamo, Akechi, or Zhao Yun. All three of these units have high dmg skills that target 6/9 ally zones. While you can’t completely avoid the dmg, you can reduce the impact by using –I(Tamamo and Akechi) or I–(Zhao Yun) formations respectively.
Good understanding of targeting can also be used to increase the effectiveness units. An example of this as a new player would be Octavius and Davinci because your early success depend on how you utilize them.
Octavius’ first skill attacks the unit directly in front of her, so you will want to constantly move her to attack key targets in the front row to get good value.
Davinci’s ultimate casts a tornado in the row infriont of her. A common mistake new players make is placing Davinci in a way that the ultimate only hits one person, when it could be hitting two or three people instead (which drastically improves the chances of her getting any knock ups for Octavius which would improve Octavius’ dmg potential). In the images provided below notice how in the first image, Davinci only gets 1 knock up but with correct placement in the second image she now gets potentially 3 knock ups from the ultimate which drastically improves the effectiveness of not only her, but Octavius as well.
