Jumplight Odyssey – Useful Tips and Tricks

Tips and Tricks

Tip one

Do not pick up civilians!

If you want to make it to the Forever Star, don’t pick up ANY civilians by doing Search and Rescue Away Missions.

Civilians do not help you, they provide no benefit. Instead, they provide a drain on your resources and bunk spaces, and you need as much of that as you can fit.

And while they do give you a boost to Hope, you can get far more of a boost, not to mention an automatic and continuous one, just by keeping Ham the Mascot alive and keeping the needs of your crew properly met. If you ever get to a point where you need their boost to Hope, you screwed up BIGTIME in the VERY early game.

So in short, don’t pick up civilians. There is no use for them, you can’t train them to replace or supplement your crew, and they provide a drain on resources and crew that can, and should, go to other things. They are useless. If you really want to pick some up, you can do so at the very end as an an “up yours” to the Zutopians, but beyond that, I wouldn’t.

Tip two

Remove all Benches, Chairs, etcetera. Beds are better all around for what seats do.

Tip three

Remove all planters. They don’t give any oxygen, nor do they provide any other benefit. They should be in the Decorative section, because that’s what they are. Decorative.

Tip four

Build ahead. I ALWAYS expand the initial Bedroom and Washroom you get all the way to the edges of the buildable area on their respective side of the deck they’re on, and then I fill that area to the brim with Beds for the Bedroom and Shower Cubicles for the Washroom.

Tip five

Don’t skimp on missions. Don’t jump as soon as you’re able if there are still resource gathering missions available. ALWAYS go on any Resource Extraction and/or Salvage missions you have available. Go on all possible Water Extraction missions too, unless your water tanks are already full.

Tip six

You do NOT need the Medigel Centrifuges past The Regency region of space. You will get more than enough Medigel, Ammunition, etcetera by going on salvage missions and if you’re following what I’m writing, you won’t even need that ammunition because you will never see a Zutopian. In my latest playthrough, the Zutopians were more than an hour of real-time behind me even on the Fast Forward time setting. As long as you keep moving forward at a slow-but-steady pace, you will never see a Zutopian.

Tip seven

Use the time you have wisely. During the Tutorial, there will be sections where you have to stop and wait for things to finish, like a salvage mission. Use that time to do things like establish additional planters and plant types in your greenhouse, put down power switches and oxygen generators in corridors, and expand said corridors if need be.

Tip eight

Remove the Princess’s Cabin entirely, except for her bed. You don’t need her desk, chairs, rug or anything else. Her bed is the only thing she needs, unless she has the Sleepless trait in which case you can remove that too.

Tip nine

Stay at Green Alert as long as possible. Don’t use Yellow Alert, and only go to Red Alert when there’s incoming asteroids. Your crew will only tend to their needs automatically at Green Alert, so staying at this alert level will minimize the amount of micromanagement you have to do.

Follow these tips and the game becomes extremely easy, you will be able to complete it and reach the Forever Star in under 4 or so hours, with no challenge unless you deliberately or accidentally botch it up.

You still have to pay attention, but like the old AFLAC insurance commercial used to say, “It’s so easy a caveman could win it!”.
