Stellaris – On the Shoulders of Giants Explained

On the Shoulders of Giants (Federations DLC)

It’s a product of its time – it was an origin much like Remnants, designed to show off the new archaeology sites mechanics.

Throughout the course of doing the sites, you’ll get a couple of technologies with 85% research progressed, and at the end of it you get a modifier that buffs your research speed, governing ethics attraction, happiness, and monthly unity. Then in the mid-game year, the chain fires up briefly again and at the end of that, your empire modifier gets replaced by a stronger version, as well as granting Devolving Beam as a research option.

In return, however, you have NO precursor at all until after you finish the origin. Whether or not that’s worth it is up to you.

What the sites can do for you is drop a few minor artifact deposits, and the income from those can be greater than the income provided by Remnants from the Faculty of Archaeostudies. So if you want to do an archaeotech build, Remnants is the “obvious” origin choice, but Shoulders of Giants shouldn’t be written off either – it will be slightly behind in the initial techs, but the origin can (subject to RNG) provide you with more artifacts to spend on ship components.

The earlier you set the mid-game year, the better the origin becomes, since you get the fully complete empire modifier sooner.
