Not very many new players pass the first encounter on the first try, but the idea is that it should teach you (in an admittedly brutal fashion) the basics of the game.
Tips for New Players
Here are some tips that we should tutorialize a lot better and over a longer period of time:
- Fight on your terms, not theirs (move slowly, pull one enemy at a time if you can, kill it, then continue).
- Dodge or move -before- they attack. You do not have immunity frames by default (there is a card that gives you this though, that is in your starting deck!), but enemies will not track you with their attacks after they’ve started to “charge up”.
- Use your cards – the Stone Rune passive (takes up a slot, has no active effect) gives you immunity to bleed and increased physical resistance. Once you have that card equipped, the snapjaws can only hurt you with their regular attack.
- Use healing. You have one healing salve in your deck by default, and the green plants drop healing runes when killed (one every 3 or so on average). There is also a green vase which is guaranteed to drop a healing rune. Be judicious – as in, don’t overheal – but keep your health topped up. As you’ve probably noticed, you are quite ‘squishy’ to begin with.
- Smash things! Destroying crates and other destructible things (including vases and bushes) will give you stamina, which will let you pull more cards, which will improve your chances overall. My suggestion for starters is to go, if you have the option, in this order: Improved Dodge (this gives you immunity frames during your dodge), Lesser Stone Rune (for bleed immunity), Healing Salve (in case you are badly hurt and bleeding, this can save you) and last Magic Arrow. The magic arrows can be very useful against the slower enemies, but if the snapjaws are giving you the most trouble, they are probably not fast enough!

There’s a slider in the settings menu that can reduce the music volume.
