Expeditions: A MudRunner Game – Beginners Tips and Tricks

Tips and Tricks for New Players

Always think about what you’re doing, before you do it. This is a problem solving game. To be successful at such, you have to spend time observing, planning, and devising solutions. It is slow-paced and implies an entire process behind your driving decisions.

Keep in mind that the shortest path to your target location isn’t always the best one, or even a good idea to begin with. Also, some vehicles might be able to traverse routes that could be a bad idea for other vehicles. When you set out to do a task, use your drone to reveal the map ahead of you, so you can then study the terrain to analyze plausible routes. If something looks like you can cross it on the map but you can’t be quite sure, then drive closer and send the drone out again to scout the path ahead of you.

Now, every vehicle handles differently, so you’ll have to get a feel for the ones that you like to use, to figure out their quirks and their limits and thus understand which upgrades you need to install on them to make them effective.

It’s not always a good idea to pick the highest performance option, because there’s always drawbacks to them; engine upgrades will provide more torque and horsepower but decrease your operational range by increasing your fuel consumption, whereas bigger tires will provide better traction, clearance, and approach/departure/breakover angles, but they will also shift your center of gravity upward and will make your vehicle less stable and more prone to rolling sideways.

A fuel tank at the back can be a great boon for travelling long distances, but the added weight will cause you to sink more deeply in mud (and possibly get stuck) and it will decrease your sideways tilt tolerance. This is why you need to get a feel for the performance of the vehicle with different components.

More general tips

  • Less air in your tires improves your traction by increasing the surface area of the tires that is in contact with the ground. It will also lower your center of gravity, which will make your vehicle more resistant to terrain tilt (less likely to roll over). Greater traction also means greater friction, which makes the tires harder to spin and increases your fuel consumption. Partially deflated tires will also reduce your ground clearance and deteriorate your steering precision.
  • When you drive with your differentials unlocked, you will be more reliant on bursts of power to get the vehicle to overcome obstacles, as this can increase vehicle momentum and provide a bit more power to wheels that have difficulty spinning. If you’re in a surface that offers good traction, this can offer a lot more power than low gear can, and possibly allow you to overcome obstacles that Low Gear could be insufficient for.
  • Try not to use your brakes when going downhill, it could cause you to lose control over the vehicle (with potentially catastrophic consequences). Instead, to regulate your speed when crawling dowhill, shift to low gear (which will then serve as an engine brake) and let your vehicle roll down.
  • When you drive with your differentials locked, your steering will become clunky because all wheels will be forced to rotate at the same speed, but you will be able to cross certain obstacles more easily and for less fuel (because a fixed rotation speed for all tires regardless of their individual rolling resistance, implies that the wheels that have the most traction/rolling resistance will always have to rotate anyway).
  • If you need to reverse with your differentials locked, then don’t use Auto Reverse. Pick Manual Reverse instead, and this will allow you to lock your differentials.
  • The Fine-Tune gearbox provides a reverse gear throttle slider even if the slider isn’t visually displayed (the same was true in Snowrunner).
  • Toggle off AWD when you do not need it. It will save you fuel (potentially a lot, depending on which gearbox type you’re using).
  • Anytime you’re planning to do a vehicle recovery task, take lots of extra fuel with you and/or hire mechanics that provide a fuel efficiency bonus. This is because the act of pulling another vehicle will greatly increase your fuel consumption.
  • Bear in mind that for the purposes of suspension performance, Crawler suspensions are softer (they adapt more closely to the shape of the terrain, potentially improving traction and stability) whereas Raised suspensions are more rigid (more consistent ground clearance and better at carrying more weight).
