Farming Simulator 22 – Tips for Plowing in a Straight Line

It seems no matter how hard I try to keep straight my tractors drift…

How to Plow in a Straight Line

Best tips I have for those who do not want to use mods:

  • 1) Smooth or flatten the terrain. Sharp angles and large hills will significantly alter your tractors direction of movement.
  • 2) At the bottom of the minimap are a series of numbers. The first number is your heading based on the points of the compass. 360.0/0.0 is due north, 90.0 is east, 180.0 is south, and 270.0 is west. You can use these headings to move in a relatively straight line. Personally I prefer sticking to the cardinal directions as these seem to be the easiest for the AI to follow.
  • 3) Use the terrain editor to clean up wonky lines and adjust your fields so they have plenty of room around them for your tractors and equipment to turn. The field doesn’t have to be perfectly square, but the closer the better. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money cleaning up your field go to the “plants” section, select meadow and use right click to erase the parts of the field you want to. It is free to erase the field this way so you save a lot of money.
  • 4) Make the new field or field expansion significantly larger than you want for the final product. It is easier to erase a bit of extra field then it is to try and micro manage each edge in the tractor. That way any wavers or wonky edges are just erased when you do the cleanup.

Bonus Tip: Clear a significant area around each field of any plants or objects. This will make it easier to see the edges, and any stray piles or objects (especially things like small branches or pieces of tree that you cut down) are easily visible for cleanup. Trust me, it will make your game experience a lot better. I typically clear a section 1 tick down from the maximum Meadow plant brush size.

Additionally cut down any trees within about 30 meters of your field. The AI completely bugs out on obstacles and this will make it run smoother (don’t forget to grind the stumps as the AI will still “dodge” the stump). Many times you cannot remove all the obstacles (like power poles/towers, or houses) but slightly reducing the field or cultivating/planting/harvesting in a different direction will fix about 90% of those issues.
